LIVE PERFORMANCE from THE ARMED FORCES RADIO SERVICE on a 16" TRANSCRIPTION DISC. PROGRAM RECORDED DURING THE 1940'S LIVE AT THE RITZ THEATRE IN MANHATTAN.
THIS IS THE EDDIE CONDON DISC #30.
Eddie Condon was one of the great hustlers in Jazz. He and Red Nichols always managed to find record dates even during the worst of times. The fact that he was totally colorblind and eagerly sought out the services of Black musicians won him not only the respect of the Black community, but earned him the friendship of some of the best players of their era. Condon was the anti-bop avatar. He was appalled by what he felt were the excesses of the Bop players and big Progressive Jazz bands like Kenton, Gillespie, and Eckstine. His roots in trad jazz ran deep. From his early exposure to the 20's giants like Armstrong, Noone, and Oliver, he became a charter member of the Chicago school and never lost his love for the free-wheeling collective drive of small group jazz.
This disc contains one of Eddie's Jazz Band Ball Conerts recorded at the Ritz Theatre in Manhatten. They were unsponsored because Condon refused to exclude musicians of color in the concert lineups. The broadcasts were retransmitted by the Armed Forces Radio Network to the European and Pacific Theaters for the entertainment of the military personnel. The concerts were 30 minutes in length and although they were mc'd, Condon did virtually all of the introductions of the songs and the musicians involved along with asides to his fellow players on occasion. . The performances are live and thus there is the occasional rare "clam" in some of the cuts., but the music is tremendous. Entertaining, brilliantly performed and best of all uncut.
THIS PERFORMANCE OF THE EDDIE CONDON JAZZ BAND BALL INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING JAZZ GREATS: BENNIE MORTON who also talks with Eddie, PEE WEE RUSSELL, ERNIE CACERES, MAX KAMINSKY, GEORGE WETTLING, JESS STACY WHO DOES SOME GREAT SOLO WORK, SIDNEY BECHET WHO IS BEYOND BRILLIANT, JACK LESBERG, AND LEE WILEY. SELECTIONS ON THE EDDIE CONDON JAZZ BAND BALL PROGRAM ARE AS FOLLOWS: SHOW OPENS "WALKIN' THE DOG" EDDIE DOES MOST OF THE TALKING AFTER THE ANNOUNCER GIVE THE INTRODUCTION. SECOND NUMBER IS A JESS STACY SOLO --- "I AIN'T GOT NOBODY" FULL BAND JUMPS IN NEXT WITH "STRUTTIN' AT STICKIES". BENNIE MORTON AND EDDIE TALK FOR A WHILE AND THEN THE BAND DOES A TRIBUTE SONG TO JIMMY NOONE WHICH I THINK IS "I KNOW THAT YOU KNOW". SIDE TWO BEGINS WITH "SWEET GEORGIA BROWN". JESS STACY AND LEE WILEY PERFORM "WHEN YOUR LOVER HAS GONE" THE BAND DOES A LONG VERSION OF "SATURDAY AFTERNOON AT THE CARNEGIE" AND THE SHOW ENDS WITH "MY BLUE HEAVEN". THIS IS EASILY ONE OF THE BEST JAZZ SHOWS I'VE EVER HEARD. I AM A BIG FAN OF EDDIE CONDON AND I AM VERY FAMILIAR WITH MOST OF THE PERSONNEL IN THE BAND --- AND WHEN I SAY THEY NEVER SOUNDED BETTER .... I MEAN EVERY WORD. CONDITION OF THIS DISC: I HEARD JUST A MOMENT OF A NOISY GROOVE RIGHT AT THE START OF THE SHOW .... AND I THOUGHT I HEARD A MOMENTARY BIT OF NOISE ON SIDE TWO ( couple of seconds ) .... BUT OUTSIDE OF THAT ---- DISC IS VERY GOOD WITH MODERATE USE. NO NOISY SCRATCHES, NO DUG OUT GROOVES, NO REPEATING FLAWS. RATE THIS ONE AS AN "M" *.

M --- LOOKS LIKE IT JUST CAME OUT OF THE STORE BUT HAS A FEW TICKS THAT KEEP IT FROM PERFECT
E --- EXCELLENT BUT NOT PERFECT. SHOWS A FEW FLAWS.
VG ( very good ) --- SHOWS FLAWS. HAS SURFACE WEAR AND SOME SURFACE NOISE SHOULD BE EXPECTED. NO NASTY SCRATCHES, NEEDLE DROPS, RIM CHIPS, OR OTHER MAJOR PROBLEMS.
GOOD --- ACTUALLY, A FAIRLY USED RECROD THAT IS NEARING THE END OF ITS USEFUL LIFE.
FAIR or GOOD --- NOT MUCH OF EITHER. BUY IT UNTIL YOU CAN FIND A BETTER COPY.
"+'S" & "-'S" --- TAKE IT UP OR DOWN A HALF STEP.
