from THE ARMED FORCES RADIO SERVICE on a 16" TRANSCRIPTION DISC. PROGRAM RECORDED DURING THE 1940'S.
THIS IS JUBILEE PROGRAM H-11-108 AND FEATURES ERSKINE HAWKINS AND HIS INCREDIBLE BAND, LENA HORNE, AND BOB HOPE --- WHO IS A LITTLE OUT OF PLACE ON THIS SHOW --- AND GET'S RIBBED FOR BEING A "SQUARE" ( among other faults ).
“Jubilee” was conceived and programmed to present African-American artists and their music to the armed forces personnel of the United States and allied nations around the world. During the history of the program, eventually other artists were invited to participate, but “Jubilee” is remembered as a showcase for African-American talent. In additional to big bands, small jazz groups and singers, many talented dramatic and comedic performers appeared on “Jubilee.”Many of the “Jubilee” programs offer an exclusive opportunity to hear an important period of jazz history otherwise lost because of the recording strikes and when jazz was changing in style. “Jubilee” transcriptions are among the only recorded examples of the period for many bands and soloists. This was an exciting period and “Jubilee” documents it. Programs 1-45 (Decca and Capitol settled with the American Federation of Musicians in October-November 1943), 46-107 (RCA Victor and Columbia settled in November 1944) and 270-327 roughly correspond to the period of the strikes.

SELECTIONS ON THE HORNE / HOPE / HAWKINS PROGRAMS ARE AS FOLLOWS: SHOW OPENS WITH COMIC AND JIVE-TALKING ANNOUNCER ERNIE "BUBBLES" WHITEMAN INTRODUCING THE FIRST NUMBER BY ERSKINE HAWKINS --- "LET'S GO HOME" --- INCIDENTALLY, IF YOU ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH MR. HAWKINS --- HE WAS A SUPERSTAR ON TRUMPET AND PLAYED IN A RANGE THAT MAYNARD FERGUSON WOULD LATER EXPLORE --- VERY HIGH, VERY FAST, VERY QUICK. THIS NUMBER FEATURES THAT ONCE-IN-A-GENERATION STYLE. BUBBLES TURNS TO GUITARIST AL CASEY'S TRIO AND THEY DO "BUCK'S JUMPIN' " LENA HORNE IS NEXT. SHE TALKS TO BUBBLES WHO OBVIOUSLY IS IN LOVE WITH HER ( who wasn't?? ). LENA SINGS "SOMETIMES I'M HAPPY". ERSKINE RETURNS WITH "AFTER HOURS" SIDE TWO STARTS WITH BOB HOPE AND BUBBLES TRADING INSULTS --- BOB IS MADE FUN OF BECAUSE HE IS CLEARLY THE ONLY NON-BLACK PERFORMER ON THE STAGE --- AND BUBBLES IS MADE FUN OF BECAUSE HE WEIGHS A LOT. IT'S A NICE ROUTINE WITH BOTH COMICS GIVING AS GOOD AS THEY GET. LENA HORNE DOES THE SULTRY --- "MAKE LOVE TO ME" AND ERSKINE FINISHES THE SHOW WITH THE FLAMING "GINGER SNAPS". LORD .... HOW THAT MAN COULD PLAY !
CONDITION OF THIS DISC: FIRST 30 SECONDS OF SIDE ONE ARE A BIT NOISY. THE RECORD PLAYS WELL ENOUGH ... BUT THERE IS SOME EXTRA SURFACE NOISE. THERE ARE 2 OR 3 MORE INSTANCES OF EXTRA SURFACE NOISE THAT WILL POP UP DURING THIS PROGRAM. EACH INSTANCE LAST 2 TO 3 SECONDS. OTHERWISE THE DISC PLAYS WELL WITH NO SKIPPING OR BIG SCRATCHES. HOWEVER, THERE IS A MINOR LEVEL OF SURFACE NOISE. RATE THIS DISC AN "E" *.

M --- LOOKS LIKE IT JUST CAME OUT OF THE STORE BUT HAS A FEW TICKS THAT KEEP IT FROM PERFECT
E --- EXCELLENT BUT NOT PERFECT. SHOWS A FEW FLAWS.
VG ( very good ) --- SHOWS FLAWS. HAS SURFACE WEAR AND SOME SURFACE NOISE SHOULD BE EXPECTED. NO NASTY SCRATCHES, NEEDLE DROPS, RIM CHIPS, OR OTHER MAJOR PROBLEMS.
GOOD --- ACTUALLY, A FAIRLY USED RECROD THAT IS NEARING THE END OF ITS USEFUL LIFE.
FAIR or GOOD --- NOT MUCH OF EITHER. BUY IT UNTIL YOU CAN FIND A BETTER COPY.
"+'S" & "-'S" --- TAKE IT UP OR DOWN A HALF STEP.
