I can’t test-play vinyl at the minute, so with that said…
17-Lot Beatles 45’s and Picture Sleeves, 1 Test Pressing, 1 Four By E.P. G to NM Singles!
This past week, I took in a sizeable lot of picture sleeves from the 50’s through the 80’s at a local estate sale. There were 22 Beatles sleeves in total, of which I wanted 4 of them for my personal collection. Here are 17 of my duplicates on offer for one price. There’s an 18th one, “Lady Madonna,” also for sale this week. It has the fan club flyer, so I decided on selling it separately.
Regarding the test pressing, I will assure you 100% that it’s not a Beatles or related test. My first clue was that it is on high quality virgin vinyl, which shines clear blue. Virgin vinyl was not a technology offered to the public in the 1960’s. I won’t have time to play it before listing time, and so I’m not entirely sure what it could be.
I did ask Co-Pilot if it could tell me what title the catalogue number TR-602 was assigned to. See photo for the result it gave me. But please keep in mind that there’s no guarantee that this record will play that song.
Unless otherwise indicated, all sleeves are east coast Scranton sleeves, with the flat-cut top edge.
1. She Loves You/I’ll Get You First Pressing 45
Vinyl--- VG+/EX. A few soft scuffs on the A-Side, B-Side looks nearly new.
Plates--- Monarch first pressing. Machine-stamped “MR” in a circle, “Mastering Reco-Art Phila” machine-stamp on both sides. Matrix numbers are the first pressing tall numbers.
Labels--- VG+/VG+. “Don’t Drop Out.” Small number sticker on A-Side label. Wide font, no George Martin credit.
Sleeve--- VG. Shows light wear. Two seams are split about an inch or two.
2. My Bonnie/The Saints
Vinyl--- Vinyl inside is a copy of the “Four by the Beatles” Capitol E.P. in G condition. Lots of scuffs and scratches.
Plates--- F3/F3. Machine-stamped triangle with the letters, “IAM” inside it makes this copy pressed by Scranton.
Labels--- VG. Average wear for a record from 1964, nothing damaging. Has the “ASCP” error on one side.
Sleeve--- G. Lots of wear, small tears at the top edge. NO SPLIT SEAMS, THOUGH.
3. A Hard Day’s Night/I Should Have Known Better
First Pressing 45
Vinyl--- VG-. Still about 60% original shine with lots of light scratches, both sides. One feelable one keeps it from a VG grade.
Plates--- T8/T8. Letter “R“ in the dead waxes makes this an RCA consignment pressing.
Labels--- VG+/VG. Side 1 has some edgewear, Side 2 has initials written on it.
Sleeve--- VG. No splits, just light, general wear.
4. And I Love Her/If I Fell First Pressing 45
Vinyl--- G. Lots of light scratches on both sides.
Plates--- F5/F3. Machine-stamped triangle with the letters, “IAM” inside it makes this copy pressed by Scranton.
Labels--- VG/VG. Moderate edgewear on both labels.
Sleeve--- VERY Strong VG. Others would have no problem with grading this one VG+, and I wouldn’t drop my lids halfway and stare at them suspiciously. Some small tears at the top edge, nothing bad. Some light to moderate ringwear both sides, and that’s about it. Sticker residue on one side. Full-bodied color. NO SPLIT SEAMS.
5. I Feel Fine/She’s a Woman First Pressing 45
Vinyl--- VG++/VG++. Nice 45. Has one or two very light lines per side, otherwise the vinyl shines 90 to 95% brand new.
Plates--- P13/T16. Decca consignment pressing, no Capitol insignias in the dead waxes.
Labels--- NM/NM. Labels look 1964-brand new.
Sleeve--- EX/VG+. Scarcer Los Angeles sleeve with thumb tab. Side 1 looks nearly brand new. Side 2 has some light ringwear. NO SPLIT SEAMS.
6. Help! I’m Down! First Pressing 45
Vinyl--- VG+/VG. Vinyl has some scuffs, Side 2 more than Side 1.
Plates--- F1/F5. Machine-stamped triangle with the letters, “IAM” inside it makes this copy pressed by Scranton.
Labels--- EX/VG+. Side 1 label has a small number sticker.
Sleeve--- Nice VG. Sleeve has some light wear, light yellowing. NO SEAM SPLITS.
7. Eight Days a Week/I Don’t Want to Spoil the Party
First Pressing 45
Vinyl--- VG++/VG++. Each side has just one very light hairline. Had those not been there, this 45 would have graded EX. More than 90% original shine.
Plates--- P1/F3. Machine-stamped triangle with the letters, “IAM” inside it makes this copy pressed by Scranton.
Labels--- NM/EX. Beautiful 1965 labels.
Sleeve--- VG+. Scarcer Los Angeles sleeve with thumb tab. Some light wear on both sides, NO SEAM SPLITS.
8. Yesterday/Act Naturally Test Pressing Inside Sleeve
As mentioned above, judging by the virgin vunyl and high-quality vinyl, this cannot be a Beatles test pressing. See photos for Co-Pilot information for the catalogue number.
Vinyl--- NM/NM. Store stock 45.
Plates--- TR 602/TR 602. I’m guessing that this has the same song on both sides, and that it must have been a test pressing of a promo. Machine-stamped “Masterdisk” in the dead wax means that this test was done in New York City. ALL Beatles tests were done from the Los Angeles plant.
Labels--- EX/EX. Both sides have the catalogue number written in ink.
Sleeve--- VG. Lots of finger divots and light record outdent both sides. NO SEAM SPLITS.
9. Ticket to Ride/Yes It Is First Pressing 45
Vinyl--- EX/EX. Tiny little hairlines in the lip and dead wax only. VERY nice 45!
Plates--- T6/P5. Decca-consigned pressing with machine-stamped matrices in a script-font straight line. Also has Decca’s “A1” code, indicating the first-day pressing.
Labels--- EX/EX. Isolated Edge wear.
Sleeve--- Nice VG. Light to moderate amount of finger divots and light record outdent, both sides. NO SPLIT SEAMS.
10. We Can Work It Out/Day Tripper First Pressing 45
Vinyl--- VG+/VG+. A few light and short lines only. 90% original shine.
Plates--- F3/F3. Machine-stamped triangle with the letters, “IAM” inside it makes this copy pressed by Scranton.
Labels--- VG+/VG+. Light wear only.
Sleeve--- VG+/VG+. Light wear only.
11. Nowhere Man/What Goes On? First Pressing 45
Vinyl--- EX/EX. Side 1 has a piece of fuzz pressed into the vinyl. Side 2 has a couple of small and light lines next to each other. Otherwise, vinyl is 95% clean.
Plates--- G4/G4. Machine-stamped triangle with the letters, “IAM” inside it makes this copy pressed by Scranton.
Labels--- EX/VG+. Side 2 label would have also been graded EX, except for a small, round sticker stain.
Sleeve--- VG+. Nice sleeve, just lightly to moderately yellowed. NO SEAM SPLITS.
12. Eleanor Rigby/Yellow Submarine
RARE 1968 “Subsidiary of…” Pressing
Vinyl--- EX/VG+. 90 to 95% original shine.
Plates--- P28/P28. Machine-stamped triangle with the letters, “IAM” inside it makes this copy pressed by Scranton.
Labels--- Beautiful EX/EX labels.
Sleeve--- VG+/VG. Light wear on Side 1, a little more wear on Side 2. NO SEAM SPLITS.
13. Paperback Writer/Rain First Pressing 45
Vinyl--- EX/VG+. Nice 45!
Plates--- P3/T4. Machine-stamped triangle with the letters, “IAM” inside it makes this copy pressed by Scranton.
Labels--- EX/EX. Very minimal wear, both sides. Side 1 label has a small number sticker on it.
Sleeve--- Very nice VG. Both sides have full color. Just a little record outdent and light general wear. NO SPLIT SEAMS.
14. Hello Goodbye/I Am the Walrus First Pressing 45
Vinyl--- EX/NM. Side 1 has a small patch of very light hairlines in one area. Side 2 looks very close to unplayed.
Plates--- F3/F3. Machine-stamped triangle with the letters, “IAM” inside it makes this copy pressed by Scranton.
Labels--- NM/NM. I’ll bet you these labels look today exactly as they looked in the record store in 1967.
Sleeve--- VG++. So little wear on this sleeve. Just some very light wrinkles and record outdent. NO SEAM SPLITS.
15. Let It Be/You Know My Name First Pressing 45
Vinyl--- EX/EX. Both sides have extremely light lines, keeping them from being graded NM. Got to be good-looking, ‘cause they’re so hard to see.
Plates--- Z3/Z2. Machine-stamped triangle with the letters, “IAM” inside it makes this copy pressed by Scranton. Not to mention the “Bell Sound” and “sf” insignias.
Labels--- EX/EX. Minimal wear only. Side 2 label has the small Capitol logo at the 5 O’Clock position.
Sleeve--- VG+. Sleeve has two sets of staple holes at the top corners from the cardboard header card of the day. Light to moderate amount of wrinkles, finger divots and record outdent. NO SPLIT SEAMS.
16. Long and Winding Road/For You Blue First Pressing 45
Vinyl--- NM/EX. Side 2 would have also graded NM, except for another piece of red fuzz pressed into the grooves.
Plates--- Z1/Z3. Machine-stamped triangle with the letters, “IAM” inside it makes this copy pressed by Scranton. Not to mention the “Bell Sound” and “sf” insignias. Oh, right. And the “Phil and Ronnie” hand-etching.
Labels--- NM/NM. Store stock new labels. Side 2 label has “Mfd. By Apple Records, Inc.” at the bottom, which is the first pressing.
Sleeve--- Nice VG. Light to moderate record outdent, wrinkles and finger divots, but NO SPLIT SEAMS.
17. Helter Skelter/Got to Get You Into My Life
Vinyl--- EX/EX. One or maybe two short and extremely light scratches per side. 98% original gloss.
Plates--- F2/F2. Hand-etched Delta symbol (or rifle) in the dead wax on both sides makes this copy pressed in Winchester.
Labels--- NM/NM. Store stock new labels.
Sleeve--- EX/EX. Light Light record outdent, and only a few finger divots.
**This is a great set to start your picture sleeves collection, to upgrade sleeves that you might have that aren’t very nice, or to resell individually, which the majority of these sleeves will do!**
As these records have been in storage for many years, they will play back with crackling and tics, however; a good moisturizing and cleaning with either D4 Discwasher or a VPI machine always clears them up. Thanks!)
Note: All 45’s ship outside of their sleeves in order not to damage the sleeve during shipment. Generic plain, white sleeves and Mylar provided.
Please don’t bid unless you’re willing to honor your amount, okay? Thanks!
(Please note: Regarding play-testing, my Technics turntable has somehow seized. The tone arm is stuck in the up position, and I can’t get it to fully return to its cradle. Is there anyone out there, who can tell me if this is an easy fix? Thanks!)
