THE CREATOR OF Verdis OTELLO in 1887: Francesco Tamagno. Francesco Tamagno is with Adelina Patti one of the giants of the 19th century, who at the age of 60 made some famous recordings for G&T. You can hear on this record the voice of Tamagno, who CREATED the role of Otello for Verdi

Recorded in his retirement villa in Ospedaletti, Italy

The sleeve is made from heavy read sharkskin patterned cardboard, the cutout has a celluloid window. When the record is taken out, the picture is visible. Embossed in gold on the sleeve:

Condition:

SLEEVE:  UNDAMAGED but rubbed, gold a little dark, small crease lower right side corner. Original celluloid a little wavy and yellow, picture pristine.

Original G&T era record with notice " RECORDED by the Gramophone & Typewriter LTD - For sale in North and SOuth America Only.

Record is VERY GOOD PLUS only mildest wear, some greaying last 2 cm, faint scratch. Tight crack 2cm into grooves.

Plays rel quiet VG++, last 1 cm has some distortion on top notes

Francesco Tamagno (born Turin, 28 December 1850 û died Varese 31 August 1905) was an Italian operatic singer.

The most famous dramatic tenor of his age, Tamagno was known for the extreme power of his voice - especially in the upper register - so much so that his voice was often compared to a trumpet. His particular genre of voice is called the tenore robusto. Best known as the creator of Verdi's Otello, he also was the first Gabriele Adorno in the revised version of Simon Boccanegra, a far more lyrical role. Other important operas he created include Ponchielli's Il Figliuol Prodigo and Marion Delorme. He was also famous for his appearances as Radames in Aida, the title role in Poliuto and Arnold in Guillaume Tell.

During the last decade of the 19th century he appeared not only in Italy, Iberia, and South America but also in New York, Chicago and London, setting a standard in singing which is still relevant today.

Quick note on grading:

The Grade (Excellent to Fair, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately

When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to F), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise.
"SUPERQUIET" is basically noiseless, like a vinyl pressing.
"VERY QUIET" is an exceptionally quiet record for a given pressing.
"Quiet" is a record that is a great example without undue noise for a give pressing.

These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment.

Records will be packed safely between corrugated cardboard in a sturdy box with plenty of padding for safe shipment.

Shipment is usually Media Mail, unless another service is requested. Shipping is at your risk, I will be happy to insure items at your cost.

I charge actual postage plus a small fee for packing materials

As always, I guarantee your satisfaction. If you don't like the item, just return it, and I will refund the full purchase price.

Prices below are for regular 78 rpm records. Up to about 5 records, I will ship Edison Discs for the same rates. Albums from Album Sets count as 1 record. Above that and for international shipments, it will be actual weight plus a small packing charge (1-3$ depending on size of shipment)

1 record: 4.50 – 5.00$

2 records: 5.75$

5 records: 7.50$

10 records: 9.50$

MANY MORE RECORDS: Don't worry. I safely ship 40 - 50 pounds of records double boxed in moving boxes, and even then Media Mail will probably not exceed 30$.
