Description
A MEGA RARE ANTIQUE 10" 78rpm GRAMOPHONE RECORD
NEGRO LAUGHING SONG
(an old standard)
The Laughing Song was a song written and made famous by George W. Johnson, the first successful black artist in the US.
BUT IS THIS GEORGE OR A COVER BY CAL STEWART AS CLAIMED ON THE LABEL?
THE MYSTERY IS DEBATED HERE http://www.timbrooks.net/cal-stewart-laughing-song/
AND AS FAR AS I KNOW THIS IS THE FIRST TIME ANYONE HAS FOUND A COPY OF THIS COLUMBIA RECORD CREDITED TO CAL AND NOT TO GEORGE!
THE MATRIX OF THE RECORDING IS 210 - 8- 4
perhaps they did not want to credit George for legal reasons? They claim on the label that it is "an old standard" and give George no credit for writing the song (early racial prejudice perhaps or was it just that black people were far less common in England and a black artist even as a novelty less acceptable?)
THE B SIDE IS by BILLY MURRAY - "THE WHISTLING COON" and this really is a white cover version of another of George W Johnson's songs...
