Original 1930 copy of these classic Country sides. The groups only issued 78
Moatsville, West Virginia is a speck of a town in Barbour County from where The Moatsville String Ticklers emerged in the 1920s. In 1929, the group recorded four songs at a make-shift Columbia Records studio in Johnson City, Tennessee. One week later on "Black Tuesday" the Stock Market crashed, the Great Depression began and put an end to Moatsville's claim to fame. All that was left was a 78 rpm record put out by Columbia Records in 1930 that included the tracks "West Virginia Hills" and "Moatsville Blues." "Lost Waltz" and "Goodbye My Lover Goodbye" were never issued. The band consisted of (standing in picture) Zel Frye, Doyle Shaffer, Brooks Ritter, Floyd Frye, (seated) Marshall Summers, Harold Ritter, Cecil Frye, and Gordon Frye. The Johnson City Sessions were conducted by Frank Buckley Walker, head of the Columbia Records recording division. The sessions were done in 1928 and 1929 and were considered auditions for unknown acts. As well as the Moatsville String Ticklers, acts including Blalock and Yates, Jack Jackson, George Wade and Grancom Braswell, the Roane County Ramblers, Wyatt and Brandon, Roy Harvey and Leonard Copeland, the Spindale Quartet, the Queen Trio, Earl Shirley and Roy Harper, the Weaver Brothers, Byrd Moore and His Hot Shots, the Bateman Sacred Quartet, Fred Richards, Clarence Ashley, the Bentley Boys, Charlie Bowman and His Brothers, Fran Trappe, Eph Woodie and the Henpecked Husbands, Ira and Eugene Yates, and Ellis Williams were recorded as well.
