in the famous 1934 recording with the Philadlphia orchestra, Victor Set M-217

Here in a superior pressing on FRENCH HMV in a quality that only rivals Victor Z Shellac pressings

on 3x12" 78 rpm records No Album

This set was the first  where soft fade ins and outs, instead of hard cuts were used.

Stokowski conducted the whole piece, and Victor cut it on two alternating lathes.

Condition: EXCELLENT pristine, almost superquiet

 "In recording Tod und Verklarung, Victor presents an innovation which should be of great interest to music lovers. In the difficult art of recording music there have always been two serious handicaps. One is the necessity for breaking the continuity of music at frequent intervals, often at a point which, although justified by musical logic, causes a sense of shock to the listener. The second tremendous difficulity is the nervous tension brought about among the orchestra men by the sense of responsibility for a perfect record which every sincere musician has.

A method has been found to do away with both of these difficulties to a very marked degree, and this method is exemplified in the recording of Tod und Verklarung. In the first place, the music was played by the orchestra exactly as at a concert; without interruption, except the normal pauses between movements. In this way, after the first two or three minutes, it was possible for the musicians to forget that a recording was in progress, and to play with the freedom, flexibility, and responsiveness characteristic of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Then, instead of abrupt breaks at the end of each record surface, the music is slowly faded out, and on the secceeding record faded in - a process which permits the hearer to prepare himself for the cessation of the music at the end of a record, and which prevents the customary shock of an abrupt stop.

The music is faded out at the end of one record surface and faded in at the beginning of the succeeding one; the entire musical work is presented on the records without distortion. The recording engineers have been careful to fade in the second record surface before starting to fade out the first and, consequently, although it is necessary to manipulate a short phrase at the end of each record, you will find this same phrase played perfectly normally on the suceeding record. Therefore, the entire work, without distortions or manipulations, is presented in a set of records made with the new technique; liberties are taken only in short overlapping parts."

Only a few albums came out with the overlap technique -  the Shostakovich Sym. No. 1 (M-192), the Rachmaninov (M-250) and Tchaikovsky Sym. 5 (M-253).

Quick note on grading:

The Grade (Excellent to Poor, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately

When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to P), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise.
"SUPERQUIET" is basically noiseless, like a vinyl pressing.
"VERY QUIET" is an exceptionally quiet record for a given pressing.
"Quiet" is a record that is a great example without undue noise for a give pressing.

These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment.

Multiple item shipping: I am happy to combine items for shipment in one parcel.

Records will be packed safely between corrugated cardboard in a sturdy box with plenty of padding for safe shipment.

Shipment is usually Media Mail, unless you request another service. Shipping is at your risk, I will be happy to insure items at your cost.

I charge actual postage plus a small fee for packing materials

As always, I guarantee your satisfaction. If you don't like the item, just return it, and I will refund the full purchase price.

Prices below are for regular 78 rpm records. Up to about 5 records, I will ship Edison Discs for the same rates. Albums from Album Sets count as 1 record. Above that and for international shipments, it will be actual weight plus a small packing charge (1-3$ depending on size of shipment)

1 record: 4.75 – 5.50$

2 records: 6.50$

5 records: 8.00$

10 records: 12.00$

MANY MORE RECORDS: Don't worry. I safely ship 40 - 50 pounds of records double boxed in moving boxes, and even then Media Mail will probably not exceed 35$.

One record usually ships for 25$ for 10" 25-35$ for most 12" records (Less for Canada).

For certain destinations I can get SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER rates from FedEx and the US Postal service for any kind of parcel weight, and will make use of all the cost-saving shipment methods
