A series of great classical orchestral and instrumental performances by major conductors, composers and instrumentalists.
German-Jewish Conductor Selmar Meyrowitz is - despite his large output on Ultraphon-Telefunken, underappreciated and enigmatic. He was born 18 Apr 1875 Bartenstein, Ostpreussen now Bartoszyce, Poland and died: 24 Mar 1941 Toulouse, France. Being a successful member of the Berlin Cultural scene, he had his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic on 16 Apr 1909. Meyrowitz was forced to flee Germany after the Nazi Takeover in 1933, though Telefunken continued to issue his recordings with no conductor mentioned - similar to what Victor did to Karl Muck in 1918.
Meyrowitz’s recordings made in Paris included, as well as such usual short works as the overture to Weber’s Oberon, larger-scale repertoire: for instance the first recording of Liszt’s Faust Symphony, Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 ‘Unfinished’, and Liszt’s Les Préludes, Hungarian Fantasy, Totentanz, and orchestral arrangement of Schubert’s ‘Wanderer’ Fantasy, the last three with the pianist Edward Kilenyi.
Carl Maria v Weber OBERON OVERTURE 1&2
Grand Orchestre Philharmonique de Paris
Selmar Meyrowitz
12" PATHE 78 rpm
Condition:
EXCELLENT, tiny 3 mm faint scratch end of 1, plays amazing E+ very very quiet
Selmar Meyrowitz (18 April 1875 - 24 March 1941) was a student at the Leipzig Conservatory, where he was a pupil of Reinecke and Jadassohn, and then spent three years studying with Max Bruch in Berlin, where he was noticed by Felix Mottl. Mottl took him on as his assistant at the Karlsruhe Opera in 1897, and later, when he went to the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1900, Meyrowitz went with him. While in America Meyrowitz accompanied Johanna Gadski on tour, and following his return to Europe in 1905 he held conducting posts in several of the leading opera houses of the continent: the Prague National Theatre (1905–1906), the Berlin Komische Oper (1907–1910), the Munich Court Opera (1912–1914), and the Hamburg State Opera (1914–1918). Subsequently based in Berlin, he conducted the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra between 1918 and 1923 and the Blüthner Orchestra in 1920; he also conducted at Berlin Radio, as well as further afield in Hamburg, Vienna and Rome. From 1924 to 1933 he was a conductor at the Berlin State Opera, alongside Erich Kleiber and George Szell, and returned to the USA as the conductor of the German Grand Opera Company, which toured America between 1929 and 1931. Following the rise to power of Hitler’s National Socialist government in Germany in 1933, Meyrowitz moved to Paris where he remained for the rest of his life. Here among much else he conducted the first French production of Kurt Weill’s Die Dreigroschen Oper in 1937.

A Quick NOTE ON GRADING AND SHIPPING:
As you can see from my feedback, I try hard to earn your POSITIVE FEEDBACK and FIVE STAR RATINGS.
If for any reason your transaction was NOT SATISFACTORY, pls contact me and I will work something out with you. YOU WILL NEVER HAVE A REASON TO GIVE ME A NEGATIVE RATING or a LOW STAR RATING.
Quick note on grading:
The Grade (Excellent to Fair, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately
When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to F), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise.
"SUPERQUIET" is basically noiseless, like a vinyl pressing.
"VERY QUIET" is an quiet record for a given pressing.
"Quiet" is a record that is a great example without undue noise for a give pressing.
These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment.
If you win multiple items, pls send me an INVOICE REQUEST to calculate the correct postage. Ebay check out will not give you the multiple item discount!
Records will be packed safely between corrugated cardboard in a sturdy box with plenty of padding for safe shipment.
