THIS WEEK I WILL BE LISTING ULTRA RARE 78 RPM RECORDINGS I'VE RECENTLY ACQUIRED. THE MAJORITY OF THESE RECORDINGS ARE A SERIES OF 1930s AMERICAN COMMUNIST RECORDS RECORDED ON THE TIMELY RECORDING COMPANY LABEL AND EARLY 1900s "COON" SONGS. Progressive record labels founded to express left-wing and radical ideas, have existed in New York City since the early 1930s. Timely Records, created by insurance salesman Leo Waldman, was the first company to specialize in protest / left-wing causes. In 1935, they released an album by the New Singers featuring 'The Soup Song' and 'Rise Up'. Then, two years later, Timely produced and released records by The Manhattan Chorus featuring the songs 'Solidarity Forever' and 'Hold The Fort', and later on, Earl Robinson singing 'Jesse James' on one record and 'Drill Ye Tarrier, Drill!' and 'Kevin Barry' on another (I have all these records for sale, including a trio of records written by Hanns Eilmann. This 1937 Timely Record features The Manhattan Chorus singing Solidarity Forevrer and Hold The Fort. Both sides were conducted by Elie Siegmeister. It is in excellent, almost near mint condition. The labels are in mint condition. This is an extremely rare 78 RPM and would make an excellent addition to any serious collection.
