Hello again, fellow 78 buffs. I'm back after a three-year hiatus (just got laid off again !) with numerous lots of ten-each 1920's jazz and dance band 78's, along with some interesting singles I'll be listing over the next couple of weeks. There'll be at least some occasional jazz and scarce label items mixed into the multi-lots, and some nice jazz, blues, and hillbilly single listings, so be sure to scan them thoroughly to ensure that you don't miss out on something you need for your collection. Please bear with my sometimes lengthy item descriptions; I love these old records, and this is about the only place I get to talk about them ! I'll have the shipping total after the auction concludes (depending on combined shipping and/or your election of either Priority or Media Rate shipment), but I promise I'll keep shipping at no more than actual cost to us.
KOSATCHOK / KOMARINSKA: DAVE TARRAS ORCHESTRA, on V+ Savoy 8004. Either Dave Tarras (the 'Jewish Benny Goodman') or his son-in-law Sammy Musiker happened upon the attention of Newark's independent jazz & blues label, Savoy, in 1946, securing a contract to provide recordings of 'Jewish' big-band jazz. Tarras, a Catskills 'Borscht Belt' mainstay, gives it his magnificent best on these recordings, backed with Musiker's large, snappy swing band. The records weren't huge sellers however; they were said to be too jazzy for Jewish taste, and too 'Yiddish' for jazz fans. Savoy paid Tarras' contract out before it had ended, but today we have these marvelous glimpses of a bygone era. Savoy went on to become famous for recording the giants of be-bop such as Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. The music plays strongly and fairly clearly over relatively light, sometimes mildly swishy surface noise. Labels are in very good condition.
