Description
At this time I have decided to sell my remaining Dial Records rarities and on offer in this auction is an original first edition '1947 DIAL RECORDS 'BE-BOP JAZZ' 78 rpm RECORD CATALOG/BROCHURE'.
The brochure/catalog features a short article entitled "BEBOP what is it...?", a write-up and listing of 78 rpm releases by Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Howard McGhee, Bill Harris, and Erroll Garner. Additionally there is a feature and listing for Dial's (first?) album release, the "1947 Bebop Album". Finally on the last page there is a price list and "TYPICAL REVIEWS" of Dial's be-bop releases.This is truly a seminal piece of be-bop and modern jazz history!
The catalog, listed on the front cover as 'first edition, is in a four-panel brochure format. Each panel measures about 23 cm by 10 cm, with the overall unfolded size being 23 cm by 40 cm. I have attached five scans of the pamphlet, with the second and third being slightly reduced three panel photos from my scanner, with the last two pictures taken by my digital camera, showing all four panels on either side. The catalog, entitled 'be-bop JAZZ' a CATALOG of contemporary American music' and displaying Wally Berman's cover art from Dial's two 'Be-Bop Jazz' 78 rpm albums, is in excellent (EX) condition with a few slight creases at the edges and corners, and partial tears of two of the folds. There is very light soiling and toning of the paper, but as can be seen from the scans, none of these minor flaws detract from this, possibly the rarest of all Dial paper items. In this catalog Dial 1012 is the latest release with Dial 1013, 1014, 1015, and 1016 listed with an asterisk (*) as 'watch for release date' on the bottom of the Erroll Garner panel. This is the ONLY copy of this first edition catalog I have ever seen!
