Description
Historically, a very important album, preserving the soulful music that is a root of the Delta Blues. Recorded by Alan Lomax in 1947 at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman, MS. From the album cover: "But in language, in content and function, these songs are as American as the Mississippi River. ....Here is the dark, fertile soil which gave rise to the blues. Indeed this recording, made in the heart of the Mississippi Delta where the blues took shape at the turn of the century, provides the background for America's most important song-form."
The National Archives says: "The best single document of the African American work song and field holler tradition.... These are all very powerful and all together richly African American."
