1949 ACETATES Life In Our Town WJJD Radio Chicago Judge Abraham Lincoln Marovitz
WoW..... offered are two Acetate Records dated 10/1/49 with type-written labels: LIFE IN OUR TOWN W J J D

Obtained from the estate of famous Chicago Federal Judge Abraham Lincoln Marovitz (1905-2001) long ago, these lacquer coated, aluminum discs (acetate records) have GLOBE TRANSCRIPTIONS INC CHICAGO marked labels and are marked START: Inside, RPM: 78, and DATE: 10/1/49 in typed letters and numbers as well as the title of: LIFE IN OUR TOWN - W J J D along with SIDE #1, #2, #3, #4 markings. The discs are 11 3/4" in diameter, two sided (with labels and recording on each side) and the records come inside of original SOUNDCRAFT RECORDING DISCS marked paper sleeves.

We have not played these two 11 3/4" diameter, 78 rpm acetate records so cannot describe their content, but coming from the estate of Judge Marovitz would suggest that he is included or featured in some way on the named WJJD Radio (Chicago, Illinois) "LIFE IN OUR TOWN" Radio Program. Most likely a one of a kind recording.

Famous Chicago Federal Judge Abraham Lincoln Marovitz (1905-2001) was a remarkable figure... here is a brief overview of his life and career: Earned a law degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law in 1925 at the age of 19, but was still 20 months too young to sit for the Illinois bar exam, which he took when he turned 21 and passed on the first try. He did not go to college prior to obtaining his law degree and later became the only sitting federal judge who never went to college. From 1927 until 1933, Marovitz was an assistant state's attorney in Cook County, Illinois. He then worked in private legal practice in Chicago from 1933 onward, representing many of Chicago's most notorious gangsters. Also in 1933, he escorted World's Fair fan dancer Sally Rand to the opening of the Palmer House's Empire Room. Marovitz was elected a member of the Illinois State Senate in 1939, becoming the first-ever Jewish state senator in Illinois. During WWII, he resigned from the State Senate and enlisted in the United States Marines and fought in the Pacific with distinction (it should be noted that, as a elected state official, he could not be drafted... Marovitz unselfishly enlisted out of his sense of patriotism). In 1950, Marovitz became a Superior Court Judge in Cook County. He served in this capacity until his appointment by President Kennedy to the federal bench in 1963. Marovitz swore in more new U.S. citizens than any judge in the country and administered the oath of office to both Mayor Daley's. He was a personal friend of many famous people, including Frank Sinatra, Sophie Tucker, Jimmy Durante and many others. A unique man in many, many ways.

The labels show glue-bleed through from the adhesive used to attach them to the discs, age toning and several tears with some missing material (see photos). The recording surfaces are clean and bright showing moderate scratches and scuffs from handling... in record grading terms these would probably grade in about Very Good used condition. The Soundcraft marked paper sleeves show chipping and tears with some missing material. Please examine the photos and e-mail any questions you may have regarding the discs prior to auction end or purchase. Due to the nature of acetate discs, we cannot guarantee suitability for audio playback... being sold as a historical collectible only. That said, these acetates are in nice condition and should be playable as presented.

These may contain some rare and surprising audio from 1949... in any case a wonderful and probably one of a kind historic Judge Abraham Lincoln Marovitz, WJJD Radio and Acetate Record collectible... OUTSTANDING
