"Mystery Train" is a song written by Junior Parker and Sam Phillips. It was first recorded in Phillip's Memphis Recording Service and Sun Records at 706 Union Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee in 1953.

"Mystery Train" is a rare occurrence in popular songs - a song in which the words of the title do not occur in the lyrics of the song.

Elvis Presley's version of "Mystery Train" was first released on August 20, 1955 as the B-side of "I Forgot to Remember to Forget" (Sun 223). It was again produced by Sam Phillips at Sun Studios, and featured Presley on vocals and rhythm guitar, Scotty Moore on lead guitar and Bill Black on bass. Moore's guitar break toward the end of the record is an echo of the 1946 "Sixteen Tons" by Merle Travis. It was the 4th record cut by Elvis at Sun.

RCA Victor re-released this recording in December of 1955 (#47-6357) after acquiring it as part of a contract with Presley. This version of the song peaked at # 11 on the national Billboard Country Chart. This version of the song is currently ranked as the 83rd greatest song of all time, as well as the third best song of 1955, by Acclaimed Music.

"Mystery Train" is now considered to be an "enduring classic", the flip side of this record "I Forgot to Remember to Forget" reached the Billboard National Country music chart #1 position by February 1956, remained there for 5 weeks, and stayed on the charts for 39 weeks. It was the first recording to make Elvis Presley a national known country music star.

Up for auction is a rare 1955 original recording, NOT a Reproduction. In the runoff grooves are the numbers 45-U-156X space and a little above the #20 on the Mystery Train side and 45-U-157X space and a little above the #20 on the "I Forgot to Remember to Forget" side. Written on the front side in pencil is the following: 920041-65c (c for cents). On the flip side is a self-affixed paper label with cellophane tape covering it with the last name of the original purchaser on it. There are some minimal scratches, but they don't hurt the recording. Both sides play without any skips, jumps or pops. The record still plays as good now as it did when it was new. I would rate this record to be Very Good+.

As any collector knows, this record is an exceptional investment. It will continue to appreciate in value. The older it gets, the more it will be worth.

[NOTE] The original sleeve was lost. The new Sun sleeve that comes with the record was purchased from a professional printer and was printed, not copied.
