Description

Excellent Rockabilly.....Some copies of Soma MG1240 were pressed on non-opaque black vinyl: Light will shine through the black vinyl with a reddish brown glow, blue vinyl, and black vinyl! You are bidding on the "black" vinyl. This great Lp contains 12 songs, SIDE A: Mule Skinner Blues, Torture, Beach Party, Beartha Lou, Honky Tonk, Lonesome Road. SIDE B: Dont You Just Know It, Heartbreakin´ Special, Jack Of Diamonds, High Noon, Koo-Koo, Carava. Biography by Cub Koda for allmusic.com: The story of the Fendermen is one of those too good to be true stories of the business, but true nonetheless. It's one of two guitarists, Jim Sundquist and Phil Humphries, born on the same day and month in two different towns who didn't meet until they were teenagers. Mutually infused with the rock'n'roll bug, they started playing as a duo, naming themselves after the Fender guitars both of them plugged into a single amplifier. One of the songs that always received the biggest response when the duo played live the local bars was a hopped up, rockabilly rendition of Jimmie Rodgers' "Mule Skinner Blues," complete with goofball yodels and hot guitar licks. A local entrepreneur convinced the boys to record it--sans drummer or bassist--and had it pressed up on 45 by the local Cuca label in Wisconsin It was re-recorded later that year for a Minnesota label, Soma. Inexplicably, the record caught on nationally, zooming up to the Top Ten in 1960. Humphries and Sundquist grabbed a local drummer and hit the road, touring behind their massive hit and eventually recording an entire album before the duo went their separate ways two years later. A one hit wonder group, the Fendermen nonetheless made full blooded, energetic rock'n'roll and provided one of the last gasps of rockabilly in a teen idol infested era. Cover/Record: VG--VG+/VG+. Mono. The is the original first pressing. Disc has some light surface marks but nothing you can feel... still retains high gloss. The labels are clean with a few light spindle marks on one side. There is a 2 inch split (no loss of stock) in the middle of the lower seam and beginnings of a half inch split lower right...however, the paper is fully intact and appears to only be cracked. It is not very noticeable at all. You would not have to upgrade this fine, 58 year old specimen. Thanks for looking and please see my other auctions
