Description

Here we have an original 1961 Alan Lomax LP Record Album, Southern Journey 2, Georgia Sea Islands, Volume II, a collection of field recordings from the South, Prestige International, plus a Lyrics Book. A magnificent addition to your American Folk collection. The legendary Alan Lomax (1915-2002), a great field collector of folk music, was the first to record folk mega-stars like Leadbelly, Muddy Waters and Woody Guthrie. This LP album is the second in the Southern Journey series, and contains the following tracks:

Moses

Turkle Dove

Rock in the Weary Land

Eli, You Can't Stand

I'm Gonna Lay Down My Life for My Lord

O Day

Buzzard Lope

You Got My Letter

Raggy Levee

Reg'Lar, Reg'Lar, Rollin' Under

Adam in the Garden

The Old Tar River

Pay Me

See Aunt Dinah

The Georgia Sea Islands are a chain of low, wooded and often fertile islands that fringe the coast of Virginia, the Carolinas and Georgia, and are separated from the mainland by sea marsh and mangrove swamp. The islands to the south were once home to several large and wealthy rice plantations and slavery was highly efficient. When the Union troops seized the islands at the beginning of the Civil War, the slaves were set free and after the war was over, the land was given to them, where they remained practically isolated from the rest of the country.

Lomax visited the Georgia Sea Island in 1959, whose culture was naturally particularly rich in early American Negro musical forms, such as spirituals and work songs, to record the first and this, the second album right there on site.

Lomax died at the age of 87, as a pioneer of musicology. Even though the FBI investigated him for 37 years, they never succeeded in finding any evidence of any Communist associations. Lomax left us with a legacy that preserved traditional music and took it to a wider audience, for which we are all eternally grateful.

The album and lyrics book are in VG++ condition and the jacket is in VG+ condition.
