Here we have an original 1961 Alan Lomax LP Record Album, Southern Journey 6, Folk Songs from the Ozarks, a collection of field recordings from the South, Prestige International, plus a Lyrics Book. A magnificent addition to your American Folk Music collection. The legendary Alan Lomax (1915-2002), a great field collector of folk music, was the first to record folk mega-stars like Leadbelly, Muddy Waters and Woody Guthrie. This LP album is the sixth in the Southern Journey series, and contains the following tracks:
Merry Golden Tree
Juice of the Forbidden Fruit
Buffalo Gals
My Pretty Little Gal is Gone
Alan Bain
Eight of January
The Soldier and the Lady
Cotton Eye Joe
Turkey in the Straw
Lonesome Dove
Turnip Greens
Nancy's Got a Purdy Dress On
Rock All the Babies to Sleep
When game grew scarce and sanctimonious preachers too think in the Eastern states, folks who like room, whiskey and varmint headed west to the hill country south of Missouri and west of the Mississippi River, known by its Indian name, the Ozarks. For several generations, the backwoods people lived as they pleased, and when the city dudes penetrated the backwoods, many of the strangers with their Yankee twang decided to stay. Thus a new folk music culture of combining Northern ballads and Southern lonesome banjo was created. Many new songs, verses, and folk song creators were produced, such as Woodie Guthrie and Jimmy Driftwood.
Lomax traveled into virtually isolated areas to record the sixth album right there on site.
Lomax died at the age of 87, as a pioneer of musicology. Even though the FBI investigated him for 37 years, they never succeeded in finding any evidence of any Communist associations. Lomax left us with a legacy that preserved traditional music and took it to a wider audience, for which we are all eternally grateful.
The album and lyrics book are in Excellent condition and the jacket is in Good condition.
