Here we have an original 1961 Alan Lomax LP Record Album, Southern Journey 7, All Day Singing from "The Sacred Harp," a collection of field recordings from the South, Prestige International, plus a Lyrics Book. A magnificent addition to your American Folk Music collection. The legendary Alan Lomax (1915-2002), was a great field collector of folk music, and the first to record folk mega-stars like Leadbelly, Muddy Waters and Woody Guthrie. This LP album is the eighth in the Southern Journey series, and contains the following tracks:

Singing well in concert was NOT a part of the Anglo-American folk tradition. From the beginning, our Protestant forefathers found it difficult to organize good congregational singing of hymns. About the time of the American Revolution, several native composers and musicians, led by William Billings, set about inventing a system that would teach the musically challenged Americans to sing well together in harmony. This music bears upon the history of folk song because it is the product of a popular movement, it is in folk style, and many of the songs are in the British-American folk tradition. The Sacred Harp people are deeply religious and can be found in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Missouri, and Texas. This recording was made at an all-day Sacred Harp sing-along in Fyffe, Alabama.
Lomax died at the age of 87, as a pioneer of musicology. Even though the FBI investigated him for 37 years, they never succeeded in finding any evidence of any Communist associations. Lomax left us with a legacy that preserved traditional music and took it to a wider audience, for which we are all eternally grateful.
