Here we have an original 1961 Alan Lomax LP Record Album, Southern Journey 8, The Eastern Shores, a collection of field recordings from the South, Prestige International, plus a Lyrics Book. A magnificent addition to your American Folk Music collection. The legendary Alan Lomax (1915-2002), was a great field collector of folk music, and the first to record folk mega-stars like Leadbelly, Muddy Waters and Woody Guthrie. This LP album is the eighth in the Southern Journey series, and contains the following tracks:

The traditions of American Negro folk music too its roots along the Eastern Shore of the U.S., especially in Virginia, the Carolinas and Georgia. From the early 18th century, negro slaves were prominent in the musical life of the community, providing music for elegant balls and Christmas frolics. American Negro slaves re-invented an African instrument called the "banjar," a three or four stringed instrument without frets and used a gourd as a resonator and a 'possum or 'coon skin for the head. It was the most popular instrument amoungst the Virginian slaves. Travelers and Civil War soldiers alike listened to the thrilling rowing chants of the slaves and the rapture of the spirituals of the Negro soldiers. There is no doubt that the east coast tradition moved west with the expanding frontier and formed the basis for new folk song everywhere in the South.

Lomax traveled into virtually isolated areas to record the eighth album right there on site.

Lomax died at the age of 87, as a pioneer of musicology. Even though the FBI investigated him for 37 years, they never succeeded in finding any evidence of any Communist associations. Lomax left us with a legacy that preserved traditional music and took it to a wider audience, for which we are all eternally grateful.
