Anderson Riffin’ The Blues...........................Van Auken The Band The Aurora High School Band has grown from C i em- bers in 1960 to its present 84 members. The Aurora Band takes pride in its work and performs outstanding literature from band repertoires and also from available orchestral litera- ture. The Band takes pride in it’s appearance and has a high sense of loyalty to the group as a whole and to individual members. Cooperation in marching and also in concert work, a fine attitude, a high moral standard, and a desire to improve are the main factors that have made the band an outstanding organization. The Band has generated a high community spirit and is actively promoted and supported in local activities, equipment needs and funds for supplies and trip expense. Public interest is high. The Band participates in the High School Football activit- ies, and in addition makes appearances in Band competition in many of the contests, festivals, parades, band days and other musical celebrations around the state. The Band competes at Ak-Sar-Ben, Harvest of Harmony, Marching Festival at Lin- coln, U. of N. Band Day, Kearney Band Day and the Melody Roundup at Hastings. The Band also made an appearance at the Midland College 75th Anniversary celebration. Ratings have been received in the top three classes of competition in the last two years, and the Band received a 1-plus in District Music Con- test sight reading, in 1960. National honor this year was a cita- tion by the National Approval Board of the FIRST CHAIR OF AMERICA, a yearbook of outstanding directors and their bands in the U. S. This is the highest recognition to a director, or organization, given by the superior directors and the organiza- tions of the U. S. The Concert Band appears in two home concerts, and one in another school community. The Band is expecting to play for the children at the Beatrice Retarded Children’s Home this year. Much of the success of the Band is due to the support given by the School Board, the Superintendent, the Principal, and the Faculty of the High School of the City of Aurora, Nebraska. The Director LEE A. MENDYK, director of Instru- mental Music in the Aurora Public Schools since the fall of 1960 attended the Arcadia High School from 1946 tb 1950; played first trumpet while in high school and was a member of various small brass groups, vocal groups, and played trumpet solos for various community organizations; received a superior rating for a trumpet solo in District IV Music Contest in 1950. He at- tended the Fort Riley Band School at Fort Riley, Kansas, in 1953 and played trumpet with the 10th Divi- sion Band and played trumpet with the 384th Army Band at Fort Eustis, Virginia. He received a Bachelor of Music in Education Degree from Kearney State Teachers College in 1959; was Assistant Director to Mr. Gaylord Thomas, Director of Bands at Kearney State; belonged to the college band, trumpet trio, brass choir, swing band, orchestra and chorus. In 1959 he was granted an Assistantship to Western State College, Gunnison, Colorado, receiving a Master of Arts in Music Education Degree in 1960 and was an Assistant to Mr. Wayman Walker, Director of Bands at Colorado State College. He has played with the Kearney City Band for two sum- mers and has played with the Hastings Symphony Orchestra and served as President of the Kearney Music Alumni Associ- ation from 1960 to 1961. He is a member of the Nebraska Music Educators Association, Nebraska Educators Association, and the Nebraska Band Directors Association.
