Highly collectible STEREO 1964 first pressing of the very impressive first album by the R&B beatrock laced sounds of Manfred Mann -- who at this point were on the level of the Rolling Stones & Yardbirds...

Beatlemania conquered America in 1964. It was also the year of the Kinks’ “You Really Got Me”, the Animals’ “House of the Rising Sun”, “Glad All Over” by the Dave Clark Five, and the Rolling Stones’ “Tell Me.” The blues-rock sound of these legendary bands may have dominated the airwaves that year, but they had to make room for Manfred Mann, a London-based five-piece that rocketed to the top of the British and American charts with “Do Wah Diddy Diddy.”

The energy and innovative blend of R&B, rock, and jazz that made the Manfreds unique still sounds sharp today. The first thing you notice is the voice of Jones, who has a polished grit that sounds authentically soulful, without resorting to the faux black vocal mannerisms many white singers fall back on. His exuberant vocal on “Do Wah Diddy Diddy” is pure pop and contrasts nicely with his dark, melisma-drenched work on “Untie Me”, an understated cry of pain with Mann’s dramatic electric piano solo adding to the song’s bluesy feel. On chestnuts like “(I’m Your) Hoochie Coochie Man” and “Smokestack Lightning”, Jones wails like a banshee and blows some powerful blues harp. Vickers’ sax is featured on their rocked-out version of  “Sack O’ Woe”, where he duels it out with Jones’ harp. Brief solos from Mann on keys and Hugg on vibes add to the arrangement’s frenzy.

Two Jones originals are the record’s standout tracks. On “What You Gonna Do?”, he uses a growling Howlin’ Wolf tone; his harp and Mann’s organ give the song an ominous feel that Wolf would have dug. Jones turns in his best vocal on “Don’t Ask Me What I Say.” The tune was never released as a single, which is a shame. It’s a driving bit of British R&B that’s as catchy as any early Stones hit, with aggressive piano from Mann, a four-on-the-floor beat, a bassline that pushes the tempo to the wall, and sizzling sax work by Vickers. Jones sings the song with a jaunty passion that’s equal parts anger and disdain. It should have been a smash.

CONDITION: The Cover: VERY CLEAN all over ~ has solid seams, all M- strong and very collectible...looks like an old display item in remarkable TOP condition....

The Vinyl: is very clean shiny/glossy on both sides, VG++ nothing but a few minor/nothing hair scuffs here or there, not audible so plays excellent ...the first thing you notice is how clean and well kept over 47 years...the labels are both clean ...comes with the original plastic baggy iner sleeve...

      A cool addition to anyone's music library!
