Original 1968 advance release promotional VINYL  super rare issued in limited 'promo only MONO ...  monaural records were all but phased out by late '67 ... the mono release offers the bold production punch unlike the stereo issue which separates the sound... 

The 2nd HOUR GLASS album was only a year away from the main ingrediants turning into THE ALLMAN BROTHERS...with Gregg on organ/vocals and Duane bending his fabulous guitar...

The group really isn't sounding like they did at the Whiskey A-Go Go, but the playing by the band is pretty ballsy, and Duane's guitar is right up front and close, and he's showing some real invention within the restrictions of the pop sound that the producer was aiming for. He also plays an electric sitar on the strangest cut here, an instrumental cover of Beatles' "Norwegian Wood." From the opening bars of the title tune, one gets the message that this is a group with something to say musically, even if this particular message isn't it -- the guitar flourishes, with bold organ, and Gregg Allman's charismatic vocals all pull the listener better than 98% of the psychedelic pop and garage-soul of the period.

Originally named the Allman-Act (a pun on "almanac"), they got an audition with Liberty Records with help from the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and a recording contract resulted. There was also a name change to the Hour Glass.

It turned out that Liberty was primarily interested in Gregg Allman as a lead singer, and did its best to dress up the group's recordings with layer upon layer of production. Moments, such as "Silently," fit more easily into the languid pop-psychedelic spirit of 1967.

This time out, in their 2nd album, POWER OF LOVE, they were given a freer hand in choosing the songs that went onto the new album, which gave it a bluesier feel than its predecessor. The band still wielded virtually no control in the studio in terms of how the songs were arranged or recorded, but elements of their sound slipped through. Gregg Allman also wrote a couple of songs during this period, one of which, "It's Not My Cross to Bear," was to turn up later on the Allman Brothers Band's debut album.

The band made an attempt to record an album of its own, putting together demos for a proposed third release at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama -- Liberty Records had no interest in the resulting tapes or in doing a third album, the first two albums having stiffed, and the band broke up soon after. Gregg and Duane tried playing in a band with their friend Butch Trucks, called the 31st of February, but Gregg headed back to California while Duane remained in Florida.

CONDITION: The coveris very clean, along the lines of "EX" (excellent!) no split seams, no bends and no writing anywhere...it looks great!

The vinyl has lots of little tiny faint scuffs that show up in strong light making it look visually VG(+), but, they are of the top surface - superficial variety, so the vinyl plays really great mostly all excellent...(( play graded after sending through a VPI record wet vacume system...)) 

      A cool addition to anyone's music library!
