Description
PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question. OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In order to meet that goal, we will ALWAYS work with our customers on any concerns that may arise. Because of that dedication, there should be no need to open a resolution dispute before working with us. Please keep in mind, we would prefer to continue to provide you the opportunity to acquire the rare music we present each and every week. Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office. Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has become very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our well over 18,000 positive feedback. We use an ultrasonic KLAudio machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. Please give us 5 stars in each category through the feedback system, and we will be able to effectively continue to fulfill your passion for rare and collectible music! We have served thousands of satisfied customers - far more than our feedback records indicate - and our aim is to continue to do so. BEAUTIFUL '69 ORIGINAL of the first Carpenters album, that became widely sought when after Karen Carpenter developed anorexia which led to her early death. Original printed inner sleeve included!
The First Carpenters album was NEVER released with this title or cover design which depicted Karen as "weighty"
SUPER-RARE Circa 1969 long gone very first Carpenters album that sounds nowhere near their signature sound to come. In fact this LP is far closer to the sound of West Coast groovers like "Friends" era Beach Boys, and the most obvious antecedent from the A&M label, Roger Nichols and the Small Circle of Friends. The Lp was quickly deleted and only re-released in the '70s when the duo became huge, but they changed the title to "Ticket To Ride" AND the cover art which depicts Karen Carpenter as "weighty" - their only LP as such. It is well documented she became so extreme in her quest for weight loss she became obsessed resulting in anorexia in which she died at an early age. Here, their very valuable FIRST LP in TOP CONDITION, 50 years old! Good luck finding a better copy when lesser copies sell into the $$$hundreds.
Ooh, 60s Carpenters. Interesting! Their debut (which flopped upon release but after they made it big, it was re-released as "Ticket To Ride") is a bit of a different beast from the material they made it big on. For one, it's got some 60s flavor to it that is absent from their 70s stuff. Also, Richard and Karen split lead vocals almost evenly here, something that would never happen again as Karen became the voice of the group on every subsequent record (Richard's lisp is on full display here too). Of course, their trademark sound is here in its infancy but they were still starting out and hadn't quite figured out that Carpenters formula. I think if you aren't a fan of their 70s material, perhaps this debut may be a better fit for you. This is easy listening pop with elements of baroque and sunshine pop and is quite good.
and the "fan-man" weighs in:::
Often viewed as a bit of an aberration in the Carpenters catalog, this 60s sounding breezy soft pop offering from the duo would slot in wonderfully with a playlist featuring groups like The Free Design, The Fifth Dimension,"Friends" era Beach Boys, The Association, and the most obvious antecedent from the A&M label, Roger Nichols and the Small Circle of Friends. Many years later, Richard Carpenter is asked about the impact of Paul Williams on the Carpenters discography, and Richard immediately switches gears to a discussion about Roger, his melodies and the influence the Circle of Friends album had on Carpenters at the time. You can definitely hear it in this album! Paul Williams is far more visible and well known these days, but it's the melodies that really shine in those later Nichols/Williams tunes rather than Paul's lyrics, and Richard seems to recognize that.
Favorite tracks: Invocation / Benediction (Richard astutely compares these tracks to the Beach Boys' famous intro "Our Prayer" from the Beach Boys' aborted '67 SMiLE sessions), and "All I Can Do" (wonderfully existing halfway between the Zombies and the Fifth Dimension). Karen's ballads are great on this album, but they're not quite definitive in the way their signature sound will become. Still fans of late sixties breezy pop with infectious West Coast blends makes this LP far different from their later superstar classics. t
Favorite tune: "Clancy" (nice musicianship and in fact Karen's drumming shines throughout this album). Underrated track: "What's the Use" (nobody talks about this track, with much to like about it: great chord changes, nice vocal interplay between the duo and a windy soft pop approach).
Overall, fans of the sixties would probably tend to rate this as their favorite Carpenters album.
