Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office.Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has became very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback. We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. Original 1969 first pressing vinyl by British underground rock band Methuselah ... strangely the album was not released in England, but only America...
The short-lived acid folk act gathered together at the end of the 60s. Strange enough, they were not West Coast psychedelia, but authentic British band (built on the bones of forgotten freakbeat bands - Dimples, Gospel Garden and The Sorrows), and signed by Elektra Records. The band's sound was strong enough to manage to secure 3-album deal with Elektra, but only two albums were recorded (the second LP was never released). The debut album was issued in 1969, although in the USA only, where "Methuselah" was totally unknown.
This is a kind of acid-folk mainly sounding as lone survivor of hippie/sunshine psychedelia from mid 60s, but on the other hand it shows perfect R&B and gospel influences (not unlike better known West Coast band, Pacific Gas & Electric "Get It On" and even prog-rock tendencies. Vocals and guitars sound really amazing, but equally might sound like totally stoned "Fairport Convention".
The band was: John Gladwin (lead singer and composer), Terry Wincott (guitar, vocals), Craig Austin (bass), Leslie Nicol (lead guitar), Mick J.Bradley (drums).
It seems that the bandmates wanted to follow opposite musical directions, so "Methuselah" didn't last. Mic Bradley joined legendary "Steamhammer", John Gladwin and Terry Wincott finally acquired some modest fame with "Amazing Blondel", while Les Nicol appeared on eponimous Pampered Menial (Bonus Tracks), before forming another power-trio with Craig Austin and drummer Steve Chapman (of Jumnior's Eyes fame).
The album has a great 60's styled vocals/harmonies, really cool fuzzy proto-heavy guitar, and interesting lyrics, with a slight "folk music" style in spots. Singer John Gladwin wrote the bulk of the material and he displayed a certain need for biblical imagery that may have confused some of the band's potential secular audience, as well as alienating any devout listeners who wondered what any of it had to do with Christianity. There's no true Christian leanings to be gleaned from Methuselah, just lots of familiar Bible references and name-drops, but Les Nicols' lead guitar cuts through any nonsense, ripping out snarling solo runs even during the quietest moments and keeping things grounded. At their best, Methuselah recall a noisier, uglier Fairport Convention, mixing traditional British folk with American blues and injecting a straight shot of psych-out electricity for the long-hairs. The album's standout track is undoubtedly the thumping, blazing "High in the Tower of Coombe," a down-beat tale of medieval wench thievery with an anthemic instrumental hook, and the excellent "Fireball Woman" is mournful, high-volume balladry.
