RARE 1971 ORIGINAL WITH GRAM PARSONS

 The FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS

        BURRITO DELUXE

                 ...USA - BROWN A&M Records - SP 4175

'Wild Horses' is a one of best versions you'll likely hear...

CLEAN 1971 ORIGINAL first pressing on the old brown A&M Records label ...the second great Flying Burrito Brothers album and last to feature Gram Parsons who was bubbling under a heavy drug problem...

Burrito Deluxe, the group's second album, was released in the spring of 1970. After its release, Gram Parsons was about to leave the group and soon did -- he was replaced by Rick Roberts, a local Californian songwriter. Roberts' first album with The Flying Burrito Brothers, was released in 1971. After its release, Kleinow left the band to become a session musician and Bernie Leadon departed to join the Eagles. The Burritos hired pedal steel guitarist Al Perkins and bassist Roger Bush to replace them, as well as adding guitarist Kenny Wertz to the lineup. True it's pretty obvious Parsons' attentions are beginning to wonder, here he sounds less focused and consequently less emotive and the songwriting and choice of tunes seem less impressive than on the debut -- however to dismiss "Burrito Deluxe" out of hand does it a great disservice, it may be not be as brilliantly consistent as their debut there are many goodies to be found on the bands second album.

Lazy Days is a somewhat inauspicious start, a plodding rocker that is rather catchy, but, compared to Christine's Tune on 'Gilded Palace Of Sin' it seems lesser, even while still very good. Things pick up with the marvelous tear jerker Image Of Me, Parsons' pleading vocals here are one of the albums highlights, perfectly matching the songs tale of bitter regret. High Fashion Queen mixes rock n roll with rural moves to charming effect, it also hints at the style perfected by Parsons on his 2 solo albums whilst their version of Dylan's If You Gotta Go, Go Now has a wonderfully rough strewn feel that gives the song a punkish feel.

Next up is one of the albums standout cuts, the swaggering, soused up Man In The Fog, looser and infinitely more jolly than anything the band had recorded to date, not only is it a standout here it also remains one of the most charming cuts of their entire career.

Farther Along ushers in a religious feel that dominates much of the album from here on in, well played and sung it may be but it's also incredibly formulaic as is the equally god bothering God's Own Singer, neither song is amongst the bands finest works.

Older Guys was the track chosen as a single and it's easy to see why as it's the closest the band gets to the swagger and verve of Parsons' buddies The Rolling Stones, still it's a poor mans Stones, Parsons himself sounds positively bored.

For the final two tracks the rather brilliant Down In The Churchyard and the fragile Wild Horses, the former is up there with Man In The Fog and Image Of Me as the albums standout cuts and really should have been the albums opening track.  Wild Horses starts a little shakily but Parsons' voice picks up and the band hits it's stride to marvelous effect, it's less assured than the Stones' version but much more fragile and tender, it's a hard call to choose between the two but definitely more enamored with Parsons vocal than i am Jaggers.

Overall, after the groundbreaking brilliance of their debut, "Burrito Deluxe" is somewhat a bit of a let down but a closer inspection reveals it to be a slightly erratic but charming and inventive album, Parsons' head might bein the clouds but he still manages to put in some fine vocal performances and songs and the rest of the band are as tight as always, it's no masterpiece but neither is it the disaster some so called critics have marked it down as.
