Ed McCurdy – “Bawdy Ballads of Shakespeare’s Time” (Legacy 111). For a time during the late 1950s and early 1960s, Ed McCurdy was one of the most popular solo singers of the folk revival. In addition to recording two extremely popular albums, When Dalliance Was In Flower, Vols. 1 and 2, McCurdy was also the author of "Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream," a song that was widely covered by other singers. It was McCurdy's recordings of more risque folk material, however, that did the most to establish his popularity, especially on college campuses, where the folk audience was branching off into more serious and adult directions. These songs are culled, primarily, from Elizabethan England with its pomp, gill-edges and Shakespearean lustiness. And they flourish with double entendre common to the idiom of that day. Cuts include: “Go Bring Me A Lass”, “The Trooper”, “A Young Man and A Maid”, “A Wanton Trick”, “There Was A Knight”, “Two Maidens Went Milking One Day”, “A Lusty Young Smith”, “Tom and Doll”, “A Riddle”, “A Maiden Did A-Bathing Go”, “The Jolly Tinker”, “Old Fumbler”, “The Three Travelers”, “Kitt Hath Lost Her Key”, “To A Lady”, “The Four Able Physicians”, and “Sylvia The Fair”. Record and cover are in Excellent to M- condition. Postage will be paid by purchaser.
