Description
AFRTS Station Library transcription disc pairing two landmark early‑1970s albums. Side A features highlights from King Crimson’s Islands (Island/Atlantic, 1971), including “Prelude: Song of the Gulls,” “Islands,” and “Sailor’s Tale” — a cornerstone of progressive rock’s symphonic era. Side B presents Isaac Hayes’ In the Beginning (Atlantic, 1972), a reissue of his debut Presenting Isaac Hayes (1968), with deep soul interpretations of “Precious, Precious,” “When I Fall in Love,” and a medley of “I Just Want to Make Love to You / Rock Me Baby.”
Cataloged as RL 36‑2, this disc was pressed exclusively for U.S. military broadcast and never sold commercially. Its unusual pairing of prog rock and soul makes it a scarce and highly collectible AFRTS artifact.

VG‑/G+ from visual inspection and test play on portable turntable. Side A (King Crimson): Light crackle and surface noise. During test play on a portable test deck, several passages in Sailor’s Tale did not track cleanly, though no deep scratches are visible. This may be due to stylus sensitivity or equipment limitations rather than groove damage; playback on higher‑fidelity systems may differ. Minor scratches and rubs present but mostly superficial. Side B (Isaac Hayes): Plays clean with only faint background noise; light scratches and rubs visible but mostly inaudible. Labels show minimal wear, both sides marked with handwritten “212.” Sleeve: Generic unbranded paper sleeve with light staining, small tears, creases, and faint ring wear, no seam splits.
