RECORDED LIVE AT TONY PACKO’S CAFE THURSDAY, MARCH 23, 1972 Without question, technically as well as esthetically, this recording (the- third produced by the Cakewalkin’ Jass Band) represents the finest of the. Band’s work. As a devotee of traditional and Dixieland jass for more years worth mentioning, 1 can say, without equivocation, that Ray Heitger’s Cakewalkin' Jass Band is one of the finest and most sensitivejazz bands extant today. In fact, 1 would happily assert that it.is quite-likely the finest jazz band ever. If one cares to dispute this judgment, all he has to do is present himself at Tony Packo’s Cafe any Friday or Saturday night a half hour or so after the group has begun, join the standing-room-only crowd at the back hall, and render his or her own decision. Groups like the Cakewalkers don’t just fall out of the sky. In reality, they are the result of intensive organizational skill and years of difficult, devoted work. Ray, after careful selection, first pulled the Cakewalkers together in December of ’67, and after playing a number of local spots, finally “found a home” at Pac- ko’s. There, in the authentic atmosphere of a true saloon out of the 20’s, came what might be called the perfect marriage. The Cakewalkin’ Jass Band, in the midst of dozens of pricelessTiffany lamp shades, came on the scene at Tony Packo’s in July of 1968 and has, every Friday and Saturday night since, been playing to a packed house. This recording, as was the second one, was made live. As for the audience, it speaks for itself; its devotion and enthusiasm arc second to none. To hear truly excellent jazz, there was a lime when one had to go to New Orleans. Chicago, or New York. Forget it. The center of the universe is now Toledo, Ohio. It’s all here — tradition, rhythm, stomp, and melody — and the authen- ticity of its soul and the vibrancy of its grip hold one, transfixed, as if he were in the presence of the beginning. DOWN THE FRONT LINE AND BACK . . . Heitger, Raymond A. — Like many musicians of his breed, Ray cannot “read,” but unlike many of them, he began his musi- cal career rather late. His first experience with an instrument began when he was attracted to the clarinet al the somewhat “an- cient” age of 19. Self taught, he worked from 4 to 16 hours a day, and developed his proficiency and polished his techniques by listening to recordings by recognized and established artists and by working from books dealing with basic musical techni- ques and essential fundamentals. A truly superb organizer and musician (see side 1, Friendless Blues, which he considers his finest performance), 'Ray is equally proficient on the soprano saxophone and frequently entertains fans with his “gutsy" vocals. Ray and his wife Elizabeth have 3 children; Ray is working on his Ph. D. at the University of Toledo, where he teaches math. Ward,Frank J. — When he isn’t putting a polish on one of his melodic, mid-range phrases or engaging in a bit of harmonic gymnastics reminiscent of the late Willie “Bunk” Johnson, Frank is a librarian at the University of Toledo, where the smoky intonations of a traditionaljazz cornetist are necessarily relegated to mere words, books, and shelves. Frank is an avid conversationalist and in ad- dition to his impressive musical ability has extensive his- torical knowledge of jazz. Lately he’s been doing a vocal with a thing called I’m Atone Because / Love You (see the last recording on side I). Scotty is constantly revealing new dimensions of talent and is ever a crowd pleaser. He is an integral part of the band and contri- butes many an electrifying moment with his. versatility and musical competence. In private life Scotty is a free-lance com- mercial artist and portrait painter. Harvey, Henry and Giesige, Euegene — On alternate week- ends there is Henry (Flank) Harvey and Euegene (Gene) Giesige on siring bass. When he isn't thumping his “bull” at Packo’s, Hank can be found at or reasonably near The Blade, where he works as a reporter, rewrite man, and feature writer.- Hank isja dy- namic, versatile musician,-and has a loyal following of devoted fans. Gene, an ex-marine, handles his instrument with incom- parable efficiency, and when the “drive” is on, performs as one would expect any ex'-drill instructor to perform'. Gene was born on October 8, 1939, and when he isn’t turning on the audience at Packo’s. can be found at his desk at Holgate, Ohio, where he is superintendent of the water department. Gene too is a crowd- pleaser and the fans look forward to his invaluable support and ever-vibrant enthusiasm. Nelson, David — The most recent addition to the band is David (Dave) Nelson. Dave was born in Alton, Illinois, on April 18, 1950, and is presently working towards a B.S. degree in chemical engineering at The University of Toledo. Dave plays a mean ban- jo that often puts one in mind of Eddie Condon, and when called upon to do so can play violin in a way that would put Joe Venuti on notice. Dave, like Scotty, is a thoroughly trained musician. H is harmony and rhythm are among the “rocks” of the band (note his work on Tish ini ingo Blues). Sheehan, William J. — “Wild Bill” easily demonstrates a versa- tility and flexibility that can, when the occasion calls for it, be a real show stopper. During the week, Bill is assistant manager lor the C. H. Hiest Corporation. He and his wife Cheryl have 3 children. Born May 21, 1946. Bill has had wide experience with commercial groups over the nation and enjoys acceptance by Toledo fans second to none. Saverstrom, Per. — Last but not least are the “eleven magic fingers” of Per Saverstrom. Born December 30. 1934, of Swedish parents in Montclair, New Jersey, Per's work on the piano is as brilliant as it is imaginative. Ina word. Per plays the hotest jazz piano to come down the line in a long, long time. Whether it be in a supporting role or as featured soloist (see side II, Honeysuckle Rose), he can always be counted on for an outstanding performance. In the past. Per has led his own group, has played jazz at Carnegie Hall, and is widely known by musicians and fans alike as a first rate artist.
