Another Amazing Auction Courtesy of Celebrating 16 years of buying and selling cool items on eBay!!!
This Auction Features: One of the rarest UK Folk / Pop / Rock records made - 68 copies pressed! This was a live performance from assorted high school students of Countesthorpe (much like the Deroy 'Colleges in Folkus' lp, I would assume...) The highlight of this record is the first recordings of Kevin Hewick who for one week was the vocalist for Joy Division before they decided to go it alone as New Order. Kevin went onto a varied solo career with records by Factory and later Cherry Red, and did a record with Adrian Borland's The Sound! This record has a hand silkscreened cover and also includes the program for Sounds IV.
Here are some tracks from the records (about 50 seconds from each song). The record sounds a little crackly but looks much better, I feel a good solid cleaning will help it tons.
Here is a sampling of the tracks on side one, Kevin's song is 4th or 5th track:
Here is a sampling of the tracks on side 2, first song is an amazing prog glam pre punk epic (my wife calls it a cross between Bauhaus and Rush). Last track is a electronic piece made with a Revox and a homemade oscilloscope. OMG!:
I contacted Kevin about this record a few years ago and this was his amazingly clear memories in reply :
Marcus where on earth did you get your copy of 'Sounds 3'???
"It is VERY rare indeed - as I recall there were only about 68 copies pressed of it.
The Music Block back then was the place where we hung out / jammed / skived other lessons, all encouraged by the tutor Malcolm Nicholls, a deadpan, inscrutable bloke but also an iconoclastic figure who got me into Stockhausen and free jazz..
Stemming out of all that activity we did a series of concerts called Sounds at Countesthorpe, the first in December 1972 and the second in April 1973 where I was in a band called Life.Sounds 3 was held in December 1973 and was my first ever solo gig!
The album is a mixture of live recordings from that concert - including 'Show' - and some things from the music block studio and in John Rainer and Gary Wooleys case a session at Gary Luetchford's house, i was present at that and I remember they borrowed my electric guitar to use that day.
I was very impressed at the time because the album was cut in London where Roxy Music did their first album, such a notion seemed rather fantastical back then.
In fact quite a few people invovled in 'Sounds' went on to do other interesting things - Gary Wooley ,Rob Cooper and Adi Barrett did a session at The Manor with Mike Oldfield; Gary now manages an arts centre in Cambridge and for some years Adi led Christian rock band i2i.
John Rainer is now a head of drama at one of the colleges at Manchester last I heard.
Jim Smith went on to be a recording engineer and I was told he worked with SImple Minds and Peter Gabriel.
Jez Simons is director of Hathi productions Asian youth drama group and was a scriptwriter for 'Eastenders' and 'Emmerdale' - he and i were to meet after over 20 years and collaborated in 2007 on the musical 'School of Hard Rocks' where I wrote the songs that became my 'Keep Your Flipped Wigs On' album.
Sounds concert tech Andy Ledbetter did very amazing things getting a job at Rod Argents keyboards in London's Denmark Street and via that meeting John Paul Jones who asked him to be his keyboard roadie for Led Zeppelin!Andy was there for Knebworth in 1979 and the final 1980 European tour and went over to Sweden with Zep to Abba's Polar Studios for the 'In Through The Out Door' sessions, getting to hang out with Bjorn and Benny - and he claimed whilst there he had played Benny a tape of the version of 'Dancing Queen' done by me, fellow ex Life member Gwyn Woodward, Richard Dalton and Nick Dunning (now a well known actor last seen on TV as Sir Thomas Boelyn in 'The Tudors')
After Zep Andy crewed for Robert Plant through the 80s.
'Sounds iV' in June 1974 didn't get the vinyl treatment but had many remarkable highlights including my leading The KKS (Kountesthopre Kollege Soundcrew) Band in 'The Mushroom Song' - we went on to do a 15 minute long Hewick composed concept piece called, I kid you not, 'Ice Cream Girl at The Apochlyse Cinema' later that year at the final 'Sounds V' concert - after that the remarkable upper sixth form we had left, my year below didn't have the same creative spark.
The best collection of tapes of those heady 70s times appears to be my cassettes though sadly I lost the one with 'Ice Cream Girl' on. Tony King (who played bass with me and Adi Barrett in 2000 school reunion band The Millingtons) did some digital transfers of them a few years ago so much of it does survive.
I am in some kind of touch with many of those mentioned above, and others too such as the wonderful brother sister sax/oboe prodigys Graham and Barbara Smith, KKS soundman Mark Witherspoon and the gifted classical / folk blues guitarist Shaun Purkiss.."
"I was 16 when I wrote and performed 'Show' and still slip it into the odd set.,I don't sound that different on it vocally or guitarwise. Forever young, that's me… I do have a copy of the LP somewhere here or at my dad's house and the aforementioned original cassettes, the odd reel to reel and the digital transfers that Tony King did.I often wonder if anyone else has anything else but my collection seems to be the most extensive that survives"
A note about my grading - I have sold hundreds of records on eBay over the past 16 years (many in excess of $500), and have never had a return or negative / neutral feedback based on condition. I always try to undergrade so that you - the buyer - are pleasantly surprised when it arrives! If you have any queries about condition of a particular record please ask (as early as possible) and I will do my best to answer all questions.
Condition: Record is in approx VG++ condition. Sleeve condition is creased as described above and / or as seen in scan!
Here is a rough outline of my grades for records (I am quite strict on my grading, you can see by my feedback and comments...):
Mint: New or sealed (if not sealed then I opened it myself...)
NM: Played just a few times, like new.
Ex, Exc or Excellent: A record that has been played a handful of times and has been very well taken care of. No audible scratches to speak of, maybe a pop or two.
VG++: A very decent used record, a few pops and/or some very light scratches but very acceptable.
VG+: A very good used record but with light scratches that are more noticeable during the listening process.
VG: A record that has scratches, pops and is starting to show some serious wear.
Fair / Good: Many scratches, writing on cover, a useable but rough record.
Poor: unplayable or nearly so, filler copy - I would only sell a very rare record in this condition.
