Each year a new challenger would appear and each year they would fall victims to John Wooden’s collegiate dynasty. According to the experts the 1973-74 season would be no different. However, down in Raleigh, North Carolina, theWolfpack of North Carolina State were putting the final touches on a machine that would succeed where the others had failed. Paced by superstar David Thompson the Wolfpack were coming off a 27-0 season. Their first setback came early in the campaign when, in a much ballyhooed duel of the titans, the Wolfpack lost to UCLA. For many teams that would have been the end of the season but the Wolf pack picked up the pieces and went undefeated the rest of the way. The Wolf pack then earned a berth in the NCAA Playoffs by beating nationally ranked Maryland in an overtime thriller in the ACC Playoffs. In the NCAA Playoffs the Wolf pack first took on the always potent Providence Friars and won going away. Then college basketball’s Cinderella Team of the 1973-74 season, the Pittsburgh Panthers, felt the vicious bite of the Wolfpack but not before the North Carolina State Dream appeared to be turning into a nightmare when college player of the year, David Thompson ap- peared out of the playoffs because of a freak accident in a loose ball situation. He miraculously reappeared in the second half and theWolfpack was off and running to another victory. Then in a classic rematch, and one of college basketball’s greatest games, the Wolfpack on North Carolina State and the UCLA Bruins met in the semi-finals of the NCAA Playoffs. For 40 minutes they fought tooth and nail, but, the regulation game ended in a tie. After one overtime period failed to resolve the issue theWolfpack appeared at the end of the line when they fell behind 7 points in the second overtime. Faced with adversity once again, the Wolfpack, as they had done all season long, fought back and won in a thrilling finish. Then in the final game against an undermanned Marquette Team, the Wolfpack waltzed to the NCAA Championship, in a game that almost seemed anti-climatic after the garrison finish against UCLA. For the Wolfpack it was the end of the rainbow. The heroics of Tom Burleson, Monty Towe, Tim Stoddard, Mo Rivers and college basketball’s super human David Thompson all led to that pot of gold that is known as the National Championship.
