It is a pleasure to have Randy as a member of the Dixie Bluegrass Boys. His many styles of mandolin playing and his ambition to learn more are an asset to our group. I'm proud that he was able to cut this album. Now you can enjoy the fine mandolin playing of a young man whom I feel is putt- ing into the spotlight the many sounds of an old-time instru- ment left too long in the background. You'll find he has something for everyone, and any mood, on this album.That's saying a lot but there is a lot of music to be gotten from a mandolin, and I think Randy knows how to get it. Since bluegrass music has become so popular in the universities as well as the many festivals held throughout the country, the mandolin is gaining in popularity by leaps and bounds. Randy Carrier is a young man from East Tennessee who plays mandolin with Betty Fisher's Dixie Bluegrass Band. This is Randy's first album and although the tunes here are not all hard Bluegrass, they are well-suited for the mandolin. If you play mandolin, or just like to listen to mandolin, I think you will anjoy this one. The mandolin as we all know (or, most of us know), is an 8-stringed lute-shaped instrument believed to have been originally made in Italy. The growth and popularity of the mandolin in the United States first started between fifty and sixty years ago. The first rise of popularity for the mandolin were the so-called "Man- dolin Orchestras" of the 20's. These included mandolins made in the same four sizes as the viol family, whereas the viol family consisted of the violin, viola, violoncello, and mandolin, mandola, mandacello, and mandobass. Of course, in recent years with the death of the mandolin orchestras which folded somewhere around 1930, the odd-sized mandolins were discontinued till today, the only size still being produced is the mandolin. It is very possible that the mandolin could be all but forgotten had it not been in America. That style being called bluegrass music originally started in 1939 by Bill Monroe, who happens to be a mandolin player, himself. He incorporated the mandolin along with the fiddle (violin), guitar, and bass into bluegrass music. (The banjo didn't come along until later.) Since 1939, the popularity of the mandolin has risen to a considerable height and may someday rival the banjo and guitar for popularity. However, the mandolin is atill a somewhat open field, to say the least. The mandolin is, in the country today, primarily a lead instrument in bluegrass music; however, I should like to point out that bluegrass is not the only music that can be performed on it. For instance, the violin has a range from classical to bluegrass, such as the mandolin. Many styles of music such as classical, bluegrass, jazz, popular, and hornpipes and other fiddle numbers are possible for use on the mandolin. It is these types of music that I have attempted to present here. Classical: Bouree' in E Minor & Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring are classics written by Johann Sebastian Bach. Also, Mandolin Prelude No. 1 in G is a classically styled piece written by myself. Greensleeves is an old English lute tune lost in antiquity. It dates back to the Renaissance period. Bluegrass: Arab Bounce, and the melodies consisting of Turkey in the Straw, Sailor's Hornpipe, and Old Joe Clark are prime examples. Jazz: Little Rock Getaway is a lively tune with a lot of room for im- provisions (hence, I apply the term Jazz.) Popular: Those Were the Days, Hornpipes and other old fiddle tunes: Arkansas Traveller and Randy's Hornpipe (an original). Finally, to round it out, I have included an old well-known hymn: What A Friend We Have In Jesus. I think, in the future, we shall see a lot of different styles of music on the mandolin.
