Description

1986 Previn & the RPO in the complete Tchakovsky Nutcracker ballet. Sealed, never opened 1st issue Audiophile EMI DMM EX 157 27 0457 3 Box set of two lps with booklet (no reason to assume any of that missing, weight feels right.). Despite the enormous regar for the TAS listed 1973 account of this Previn made with the LSO, Ivan March of grammophone singled this out as a Desert Island Disc (i.e. one of six recordings out of everything ever made to to take to a desert island if that was all allowed):  

"With Christmas looming, an obvious first choice must be the splendid new HMV set of Tchaikovsky's complete Nutcracker so winningly and elegantly played by the RPO under André Previn—an ideal Christmas gift for anyone. Tchaikovsky's masterly score, brimful of memorable tunes and felicitous orchestral colour has been given a superb, natural recording too, bright, yet full, the acoustic almost ideally judged. I have not heard the CDs but the LPs are firstrate in every respect..... I praised this set highly in December—it is desert island fare for me—and commented on the many felicities of both the playing (wonderfully fresh with Previn imaginatively flexible throughout) and the excellently balanced recording, made in EMI's Abbey Road No. 1 Studio. The sound was first class on the LPs, the background silence increases a sense of realism in the gently scored moments (like the introduction to the gorgeous "Waltz of the Flowers", with its harp roulades and velvety horns). "

Big week in my list also for early lp's. Look at others in a strong Audiophile and most collectible soloists list, a great week for early music Lp's and early stereo from the Uk from me.
