Description
Up for bid is two vintage metal master negative image pressing plates, called "Father Plates", which were used to press positive image "Mother" plates.
The record produced by these plates was under the label of the Historic Record Society (HRS), catalog 1086. There is an "A" plate, and a "B" plate; the numbers and letters are etched in reverse on the plates.
There are HRS record labels on the outsides of the sleeves. Both state "Limited Edition."
The recording was by CELESTINA BONINSEGNA singing soprano arias from Pietro Mascagni's "ISABEAU." Boninsegna recorded more sides than most of her contemporaries, recording both in Europe and the U.S., and I have no idea from which labels these "negative image" plates were made. And, I can't be sure when these Fathers were made, but both sleeves are stamped with the date "FEB 21 1951."
These are copper plates with a silver or (less probably) nickel plating. The copper has tarnished some on the reverse, but the plating is bright and shiny, with just a couple scuffs. Each weighs about 12.5 ounces. The sleeves are appropriately heavy-duty, with no splits or tears, but there are marks in red and regular pencil. BEWARE: THESE ARE UNPLAYABLE ON ANY REGULAR PHONOGRAPH.
