Description

1961 '2nd Pigeon and the Mocking Bird' - Sounds of Steam Volume 4 recorded by O. Winston Link 12" Mono LP Vinyl Record.
You're wondering about the title, maybe thinking the record should be subheaded, "Sounds of Steam Ornithology, Vol. 4"? 2nd PIGEON is a train - a train whose business is coal and which was among the very last anywhere in America to be pulled and pushed by heavy steam power, a mockingbird, a genuine night-warbling mimus polyglottus which once at 11 P.M. loosed its torrent of Imitative song upon the dark countryside whistled, trilled, chirruped and catcalled as a Saltbranch engine lugged plaster board over a and found himself on Side B.
The recording as a whole is another example of O. Winston Link's careful workmanship. Side A puts you on a coal train, alternately hurrying through the West Virginia hollows and shifting at mine sidings. During Side B you sit in the darkness above a different kind of railroad, working through the plateau of far south western Virginia. As in "Thunder on Blue Ridge'1 each side tells a connected story. "2nd PIGEON" is no series of flashy excerpts; it was made for the enthusiast who knows and loves steam railroading.
