Description
16th Street Records is proud to sell one of the rarest and most important records it's ever had the pleasure of selling: an original 78 rpm acetate of "Mama Soul" Doris Troy singing two unknown/unreleased songs: "Where I Stand" on one side and "Forgive" on the other, by composer and arranger, Maurice Shapiro.
Doris Troy is credited as "Doris Paye" or "Payne" on one side of the acetate, which is from legendary New York recording studio, Stea Phillips. Doris Payne was her first stage name (she was originally born Doris Elaine Higginson) until she settled on the second stage name of Doris Troy. On one side of this acetate is the song "Forgive." As far as I know, there are only three known copies of her singing this song: 1) a 45rpm acetate I sold last week 2) another 78 rpm acetate in my possession and 3) this 78rpm acetate. However, on the OTHER side of this acetate, there is ANOTHER soul/R&B song she recorded "Where I Stand." As far as I know, this is the ONLY copy of this song anywhere on record or otherwise. There is no reference to this song anywhere online, and music identification software Shazam can't identify it. In other words, this is unique, and as rare as rare gets.
My guess is that this recorded somewhere between the time she was discovered by James Brown in 1960 at the Apollo and recording "Just One Look" as a demo for Atlantic in 1962. During this time, she was working as a back-up vocalist for Atlantic alongside other famous singers Cissy Houston and the Warwick sisters. She did release a single around this time by the same producer Maurice Shapiro, "Foolish Decision" and "You Better Mind," on the Shirley label. This is possibly from the same session.
This retains a little doo-wop flair, but is transitioning into girl group/soul. She is in peak form, alternately tender and belting, while the background vocals are excellent: possibly the Warwick sisters, Cissy Houston or some combination, as they were all playing around that time as the Sweet Inspirations. The vinyl VG+ on the "Where I Stand" side. I haven't tested the "Forgive" side, as acetates are fragile and I didn't want the recording on that side to deteriorate. It looks to be in the same condition as the other side. I also didn't clean it for the same reason. It is, as-found, out in the crate digging wild.
If you have the chance, please listen to the earlier 1950s version of "Forgive" I listed on ebay, in my ended listings, as well as the 45rpm of "Forgive" by Doris Troy that I auctioned a couple days ago. Note: The clip below is only a partial clip of the song.

A couple people have asked if I have any more acetates of "Where I Stand" that I plan to sell later. No, I do not. As far as I know, this is the one and only known example of this song anywhere.
