"In 1959, as Sam Cooke was negotiating his way out of his contract with Keen and trying to sign up with a major national label (RCA) he offered – briefly – his Keen master tapes, which he had just acquired – to a small, independent FAMOUS label (which was anything but). The Famous label wisely bought the tapes under some dubious legal terms - but, yes: entirely legally – and proceeded to issue five monstrously rare Sam Cooke albums using those tapes between 1960 and 1962. These five Sam Cooke albums are some of the rarest in his entire recorded output. What is particularly intriguing about these five albums is that some of the versions of the songs on the four Famous albums are completely different versions of songs which later made their way to RCA: these are either demos, alternate takes, or rehearsal versions. Either way, you will notice some difference between some of the tracks you may know from other sources, and these rare versions released on Famous label."
