Description
3 LP LOT: THE BIX BEIDERBECKE STORY- Volumes 1, 2 & 3: All 1952 1st Editions
Offered, as one lot, is the definitive set of jazz great Bix Beiderbecke: the 1st Edition releases of The Bix Beiderbecke Story in all 3 volumes.
All 3 were issued as separate releases by Columbia Records in 1952- very early 12" "Long Playing Microgroove" (also "Unbreakable" !!) vinyl. Seldom offered together, these 3 volumes occupy an important place in the history of both music recording and Jazz.
All have the 1st Edition black and silver Columbia Labels, and each label is in excellent condition (please see photos). All playing surfaces show light marks and sleevewear, and each retains much of its original gloss. The amount of those marks are reflected in the following grades:
Volume 1 (GL 507) : VG+ : Also present is a surface blemish on one side- I listened to that portion & noticed no discernible change in sound quality.
Volume 2 (GL 508) : VG : This would have graded VG+, however there is a deeper mark (1.5 inch) that produces an audible ticking each time the needle passes over it.
Volume 3 (GL 509) : EX : This one is the best of the bunch.
THE COVERS: EX : Exceptionally well-stored over these 6+ decades / some minor scuffing, and some age-related yellowing (please see photos) / bright colours / all of the seams, including the spines, are intact (with the exception of Volume 1- it has a 2 inch separation in the middle of the lower seam) / no paper loss, paper tears, dirt, or stains. The original price has been written in pencil in the top right corner of the back cover on each.
Cover designs are by Ochshorn of Monogram Art Studio Inc., a New York design firm that worked extensively with Columbia Records in the 1950s.
Here are the Tracklists:
Volume 1 : The Bix Beiderbecke Story: Bix And His Gang
Volume 2 : The Bix Beiderbecke Story: Bix And Tram
Volume 3 : The Bix Beiderbecke Story: Whiteman Days
Of the great Bix Beiderbecke, Wikipedia writes:
"With Louis Armstrong and Muggsy Spanier, Beiderbecke was one of the most influential jazz soloists of the 1920s. His turns on "Singin' the Blues" and "I'm Coming, Virginia" (both 1927), in particular, demonstrated an unusual purity of tone and a gift for improvisation. With these two recordings, especially, he helped to invent the jazz ballad style and hinted at what, in the 1950s, would become cool jazz. "In a Mist" (1927), one of a handful of his piano compositions and one of only two he recorded, mixed classical (Impressionist) influences with jazz syncopation."

RECORD GRADING DESCRIPTION:
THIS RECORD IS SIGHT-GRADED ONLY UNDER A BRIGHT LIGHT, ACCORDING TO THESE DEFINITIONS:
SEALED: RECORD IS WRAPPED IN PLASTIC & UNOPENED.
NM-: RECORD HAS LITTLE OR NO INDICATION THAT IT HAS BEEN PLAYED.
EX: MINIMAL SIGNS OF USE (LIGHT SCRATCHING/PAPER SCUFFS), BUT IN ALL A RECORD THAT HAS BEEN WELL-CARED FOR.
VG+: LESS CARE THAN EX, LIGHT SCRATCHING OR SCUFFING IS MORE EXTENSIVE. STILL VERY PLAYABLE & WILL LIKELY PROVIDE A QUALITY SOUND.
VG & BELOW: WHILE PLAYABLE, THIS RECORD HAS BEEN AROUND THE BLOCK. OBVIOUS SIGNS OF WEAR & SHOULD BE CONSIDERED TO BE IN A LOW GRADE. A RECORD GRADED BELOW VG MAY HAVE A VALUE BASED UPON ITS RARITY OR UNIQUENESS.
WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU CLEAN THIS RECORDING BEFORE PLAYING. RECORDS THAT ARE DECADES OLD CAN ATTRACT & ACCUMULATE DAMAGING FOREIGN MATERIAL THAT REDUCES SOUND QUALITY. THIS IS NORMALLY EASILY CORRECTED WITH A GOOD CLEANING.
