Description
Here we have a 4 x 12" set from the C&F Scrapbook, Christmas 1946. A note on the inside panel of the book describes the set (see photo): "This album contains parts of a number of programs and adutiions. Numbers 1 thru 5 are music by seven men -- each being one of the two or three top men in the country on his instrument -- played without rehearsal or score. The cost and contract difficulties of arrangingfor them to play together for broadcast were too great. Numbers 6 and 7 are from a program called "Dreamboat" -- for your heart strings. Number 8, thru a world famous voice, is from the oldest and greatest script of all. These recordings were made by special permission, requiring a small number of pressings and destruction of the plates. The edition is consequently limited to 60 of which this is number x7". While I'm unsure of the lineup on the songs, the band sure is hot & tight -- good clarinet. Surely, if there were 60 copies of this made in 1947, then this is likely one of the only remaining copies. Extremely rare.
Discs range between E- and V+ condition. The disc containing sides 4 and 8 has a tight 2 1/2" crack, that has very little effect upon play (only for the first couple repetitions a very mild click). Book is in strong E- condition with a sticker on the spine saying C&F Dixieland.
This piece comes from the estate of Ed Barker (recently acquired after the passing of his widow). Ed was the owner of San Jose based Jazz radio station KLOK from 1946 to the late 1960’s. There are a handful of choice pieces from the Baker’s estate that will be listed in this week’s auctions including a 2 x 16" transcription disc of an unreleased Benny Goodman set from 1939, as well as a rare Goomdan interview disc, some KLOK station transcription acetates, a sealed promotional copy of the Sound of Music, and other transcription discs of historical interest.
