GRADING
M=Mint: Vinyl that has never been played, Sealed. If it has been played even once it cannot be called mint. This is a very overused grade. 20% of the VG+ records, on ebay are listed as a Mint record. I have collected since 1974, and I have seen only a handfull of truly Mint-perfect records. I do not use this grade, unless I can verify it with another dealer that it is truly perfect in every way.
NM=Near Mint: Vinyl that has no detectable wear. It has either been played just a few times or it belonged to an audiophile who has lavished great care on records.
E=Excellent (VG++): Vinyl that has some light visible, slight scuffs-plays new- it is NM, except 1-2 visible imperfections.
Very Good Plus (VG+): Has a few (usually less then 5-10 visual scuffs, or minor needle marks) defined identifiable marks on the surface, full mirror gloss and plays with full sound with no loss of audio fidelity.
Very Good. (VG): Above average vinyl that has visible surface wear that causes some surface noise but nothing major. Notable, visible, and obvious needle, marks, no digs, hard rubs, scratches that you can feel with a fingernail. Full, beautiful shine, and a very mirror like glossy finish is apparent, after it has been professionally cleaned. Labels are excellent and you are proud to own a VG, since it a perfectly presentable and visually pleasing to look at. It may exhibit an occasional light tick. Minor static distortion can be acceptable, but it is not fuzzy, or has a sizzling sound. There is no need in marking a VG record with a minus sign, if so, it will just falls into the Good category.
Good (Acceptable): Average vinyl that is still playable. Surface noise, clicks, ticks, static. Visible scratches. Cosmetic flaws. Looks displeasing to own, but is playable and can be enjoyable. Some label distractions are evident, writing, stickers, etc.
Fair (Below average heavily used and abused): It plays with major and defined noise. It is damaged. Groove wear is gray, with many needle marks, the majority of vinyl in the world falls into this category. Playable, but audibly it sucks, and it has many distractions that can be heard like static, distortion, clicks, ticks, pops. Only some collectors may want to obtain a copy, for a filler, until a better copy is found. The only grade lower than Fair is poor condition, and a poor record will not play or look pleasing.
