Description

4-TRACK REEL TO REEL TAPE RECORDER (ULTRA)

3 SPEED – Professional Service – 6 Month Warranty!

This beautiful old vintage Reel-to Reel Tape Recorder is in perfect working condition.  In fact, it has just been professionally serviced and has the professional service engineer’s 6 month warranty!

This is a ‘stand alone’ machine which plays beautifully through its own internal amp and speakers, or alternatively, you can ‘hook it up’ to your stereo system and play through an external amp/speakers.  I have two identical machines and have therefore decided to sell this one.  However I particularly enjoy playing the one I am retaining, through its own amp/speakers because it reproduces that lovely warm analogue sound so reminiscent of the early 60’s when these machines were so popular.

The manufacturer of this machine is ‘Ultra’ however, identical machines were also marketed with both a ‘Ferguson’ and ‘Marconiphone’ badge – all in fact coming from the same ‘stable’ and they were indeed ‘ground braking machines in their time.

The Tape Recorder has 3 speeds – 1 7/8, 3 ¾ and 7 ½ ips.  It has 4 tracks so stereo recordings can be made, or alternatively it is possible to record on all 4 tracks separately in mono, thus creating massive amounts of recording time on just one tape (you will be amazed at how nice music from the 50’s and 60’s sounds when played in mono on this machine, after all, at the time, that was how it was MEANT to be listened to!).

All functions on this Tape Recorder operate EXACTLY as they were originally intended to!  The tape counter works, as do the Recording Level indicators and all the ‘piano keys’ for ‘Stop’, ‘Record’, ‘Play’, ‘Pause’, ‘Fast Forward’ and ‘Rewind’.  There is a volume control, tone control and separate ‘record level’ controls for recording with a microphone (not supplied) and ‘Line’.

Cosmetically, this machine is fine for its age (there are ‘scratches’ on the wooden front panel and the lettering on the face panel is faded, but it is after all probably over 40 years old, so is true ‘vintage’).  The clasps which hold the lid on work fine but there is one ‘hinge catch’ missing on the back – this does NOT however prevent the lid from fitting securely.

The input and output ports are the ‘DIN’ type – To use the ‘Radio in/out’ (so that you can hook up to your stereo amp), you would need to buy a ‘DIN’ to 4 x Phono’ lead (readily available from ‘Maplins’ for around £4).

The two matching BASF spools shown in the photographs ARE included in the sale.  The tape has been recorded on just once (I think there are a couple of Beatles LP’s on 2 of the tracks).

As you will see from the final photograph below (which shows some of the machines I have in daily use), I am a serious collector of quality ‘Reel to Reel’ machines, and I have to say that I really enjoy using this particular model, probably because it is so simple to use and the sound from its own internal amp/speakers is so pleasing.

If you live local enough, you are more than welcome to visit my home for a demonstration, once you have made a sensible bid, failing which, you can bid with absolute confidence because if this machine is not everything I’ve said it is, you can return it for a full refund within seven days of receipt!

This particular machine has been serviced very recently by one of the UK’s leading ‘reel to reel’ specialists, Geoff Kremmer of Servicesound (see www.servicesound.com) and he has provided me with a six months warranty which IS transferable to the successful bidder, so please bid with total confidence.  The heads are in outstanding condition with no real sign of any wear and tear and all functions operate quietly, smoothly and exactly as they were designed to.

The winning bidder is very welcome to collect the machine from my home if that is convenient and delivery may be possible within certain areas as I am often out and about on business.  Alternatively, the Tape Recorder will be very securely packed and sent by reliable courier with adequate insurance.

PLEASE READ THE FEEDBACK COMMENTS I HAVE FROM ‘BUYERS’ (THESE DO, I BELIEVE, SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES).  THEN BID WITH TOTAL CONFIDENCE.  THIS FINE OLD TAPE RECORDER HAS A PROFESSIONAL 6 MONTH WARRANTY!
