Donna Loren (1947 - )

I'm a sucker for the 60s 'girl group' sound, even if the singer is actually a soloist. I was so enthralled by some of the youtube postings of "Ten Good Reasons", that I've provided links to them all, as well as one to my favourite side, "Ninety Day Guarantee". Donna shot to fame as "The Doctor Pepper Girl", the public face of the soft drink that always seemed to be sueing Coca Cola. It's not surprising they chose her, because she was quite a looker, reminding me a lot of Lulu in her prime. Like the Scottish minx, she wisely changered her name (from Donna Zuker), and is still recording today, on the wrong side of sixty. Donna was never a major star - not once hitting the Billboard Hot 100 - but she has a very lengthy entry in wikipedia. She was typical of the wholesome young lady that parents would have been proud to see their son dating. She was also perfect for the big screen, and featured in many of the 'beach' movies of the era, usually singing her latest single. These films included Muscle Beach Party, Bikini Beach, Pajama Party, and Beach Blanket Bingo. You can even catch her in an episode of The Monkees. I think she was cute, so I've provided another piccy (don't tell my wife!)

As for the single on offer here, it's one of several Capitol 45s listed by John Manship, with "Blowing Out The Candles" being her most collectable (particularly with a picture cover). This one comes a close second, and bears the name of H.B. Barnum as arranger. He waved his magic baton in the studio, and the orchestra had to obey. The result is classic power-pop, and if the singalong "Ten Good Reasons" is a little on the sugary side, then there's always the more traditional dancer on the flip. The Northern scene has played far worse numerical tracks than "Ninety Day Guarantee" (who said "Nine Times Out Of Ten"?)
