In a world where common 'second issues' can sell for upwards of £50 on eBay, it seems that the world has gone mad. So far this week, I've seen at least five boo?legs selling for just that amount, even though they are about as rare as sand on a beach. Considering that they only sold for about a quid when the 'press gang' first got hold of them, that's a vast mark-up. During the mid-70s, pressings were exceedingly easy to pick up, and even those that are now genuinely hard to find could be bought by anyone with a pound in their pocket. Today, some of them go for crazy money, sometimes because the seller only discloses the fact that it's a repro somewhere in the small print. I even saw a recent seller trying to pass off a 70s repro of Patti & The Emblems on Kapp as an original, when it obviously wasn't (no red 'A' for a start). Is it ignorance on the part of the seller? Or blatant fraud? Manship's latest guide has all the information you need to tell an original from a repro, with illustrations of most. Get a copy before you start listing.

Collecting Northern Soul is an exceedingly costly affair, particularly in the over-inflated market of today. When I first discovered the pleasures of Northern Soul, in 1973, I bought mainly 'second issues', because it was cheaper than spending a good portion of my weekly wage on originals. I began to be much more selective in the 80s, when the money wasn't quite as tight, and even now I'm still trying to replace some of my 'pressings' with original copies. Obviously, many are now so highly-priced that I will never be able to afford them. That's why I won't be listing my count?rfeit copies of Mel Britt, The Tomangoes, Johnny Hampton, The Yum Yums, Ronnie McNeir, Billy Woods, Danny Monday, The Anderson Brothers, Charles Diamond & The Inspirations, etc.

A lot of the 'second issues' that appeared in 1976 were of such high quality that at first they were passed off as originals, and sold as such. Although I knew that this copy of Marsha Gee was a 'second issue' when I bough it new in 1977, it's also fairly hard to tell from an original, particularly in the dimness of an all-nighter. Exceedingly little is known about the young singer, and she disappeared from view after her only moment in the studio (as did so many others). The two sides of her only single were published by Smashville Music - an exaggeration to say the least! It took a decade before this one-off came to light in the UK, and it quickly gained in popularity. I don't recall whether the B-side received any spins, but it certainly deserved to be. I bought one of the dodgy white label copies of "Baby, I Need You" that soon appeared, and was horrified to find it had been speeded up by several notches. It sounded awful, and I soon got rid of it, but my memory was recently jogged by a posting on youtube, which is taken from one of those revved-up white labels. "Baby, I Need You" missed out on making Kev Roberts' "Northern Soul Top 500", but only by three places.

Of course, there's also another tune credited to 'Marsha Gee' - that slab of 'love it or hate it' Philly dance craze wimsy called "The Peanut Duck". The original source was an uncredited Virtue acetate, that either Keb Darge or Guy Hennigan got hold of (during my wilderness years off the scene). The actual vocalist is unknown, and has remained so for about twenty-five years. Since it was first spun at Stafford there have been plenty of ways to get hold of it (legal or otherwise), including on a Joker boot, a French Disques D'Or 45, one of the more recent UK releases on Penniman (with a picture cover), or any number of those CD thingys. However, no matter how you obtain it, you certainly won't be listening to the voice of Marsha Gee - whoever the lady was!

B. WOW!!!; I'd forgotten what a magnificent mid-tempo dancer this side is; soulful lead, and haunting femme backing; definitely the best side for today.

The vinyl is in stunning condition, and both sides play like new.
