Sam Cooke and J.W. Alexander started the SAR label in 1957, from their base in Los Angeles. It saw nearly sixty singles released during its eight-year life span, and a number of them have gone on to see Northern Soul exposure. Many of the recordings were close to Cooke's own heart: including a number of gospel outings by his original group, The Soul Stirrers; a handful of singles by his younger brother, L.C. Cooke; plus the earliest 45s by his close friends, the Womack brothers. They recorded as The Valentinos, and featured a very young Bobby Womack in the line-up. The label also had other acts that were destined for future success, like Johnnie Taylor and Linda Carr. When Cooke was shot in December 1964, the SAR project died with him. "Unlucky Girl" is not as well-known as "If You Don't Come (You Better Call)" (released earlier on the SAR label). Consequently, it's more easily accessible, and can still be picked up for a fraction of the cost. Don't wait too long though. Mr. Manship has nearly doubled his asking price over the last couple of years.

A. Uptempo mod dancer, with masses of dancefloor appeal; soaring strings; co-penned by Zelda Samuels and future Northern hero, Fred Smith; listen in full, via the above youtube posting - not my copy.

B. Bluesy, swaying 'popcorn'; tasty soul lead; music to strip to.

The styrene has just very faint "spiders webs" on both sides, and one very minor surface scuff on the A-side only. The play condition on the A-side is very close to mint; that on the B-side slightly less so.

Both labels are almost spotless, with just a smidgeon of ring-wear on each.

This record has been played on both sides to verify condition, but there's a full money-back guarantee on all my sales, and I'll refund anyone who isn't totally captivated.
