"LOVE BRINGS PAIN"

(US: Uptown 714, 1965)

Vinyl

Record conditon: Excellent +++ (A); Excellent + (both sides play Excellent ++++)

Labels condition: Spotless

Today I'm listing two of the more affordable singles from L.A. soulstress, Cookie Jackson. As magnificent as they are, her big money outings on Cyclone and Progress can't be owned by everybody, and here I have a couple of 'pocket money Cookies' - one apiece from OKeh and Uptown. She worked with Larry Williams on the former label, recorded as part of OKeh's connection with the West Coast (Little Richard also enjoyed the same attention); while closer to home, she graced Uptown's fine soul catalogue with another brace of goodies.

Uptown has long been a source of fine Northern dancers - whether they be golden era chart goodies (Roy C.'s club classic "Shotgun Wedding"), 'blue-eyed' Wigan stompers (Frank Lyndon's "Don't Go Away Baby"), or sultry beat ballads (the insanely-named Frank Furter & His Hot Dogs' "Imitation", probably the rarest on the label). There are some legendary names along the way (Sam Williams, for example), but Uptown really excelled when it was working with the fairer sex, as shown by the performances of Gloria Jones, The Four Larks, Maria Tynes, Marsha Gee, The Sugar Lumps, and the lady in the spotlight here. Cookie's other Uptown single is also a goodly piece of soul danceability, and was the one that started the label off, in 1965. Here's a lovely copy of her other Uptown 45. The man in the studio was the prodigious James Carmichael, but even so, it didn't stop someone goofing in the credits, spelling his name as 'James Carmichiel'!

A. Lovely mid-tempo beater; the lyrics tell of a sexy femme cat, getting dressed up for a night on the prowl; in other words, it's L.A.'s answer to "Soulful Dress"; listen in full via the above youtube sound link.

B. Another perfect piece of Northern Soul; ultra-soulful lead; wailing male backing; steady mid-tempo beat; lots of breaks; no sound link, but it's just as good as the A-side.

The vinyl is in near-perfect condition (one very light mark on the B-side only), and both sides play like new.

Both labels are immaculate.

There is no writing on either label, and no stickers or sticker removal marks/tears.

This record has been played on both sides to verify condition, but there's a full money-back guarantee on all my sales, and I'll refund anyone who isn't totally captivated.
