While not pretending to be in the same league as Dionn giants such as "'Cause I Know You're Mine (Bill Lucas), or "The Girl Across The Street" (Moses Smith), this stunning crossover soul item has recently become very collectable, and has consequently risen in value to a good deal more than it's most recent guide price - hence the difficulty in quoting a current price. Manship's 5th Edition puts it at £30, while Anglo-American's more recent updating only gives it a low rating. Needless to say, neither has a copy for sale at the mo, so I've decided to let any bidders choose the figure.
During the five year period from early 1967 to early 1972, Brenda & The Tabulations kept the Dionn and Top & Bottom labels afloat with an unlucky thirteen Billboard R&B/soul hits. The biggest was with a ballad called "Dry Your Eyes", their debut 45, which went to #8, as well as #20 on the pop Hot 100. The group were initially a quartet (see above photo - lead singer Brenda Payton, plus Jerry Jones, Eddie Jackson, and Maurice Coates). The single here dates from this four member period, and was virtually the only one of their 60s singles not to reach any Billboard chart. They briefly became a quintet in 1969, when Bernard Murphy joined the line-up, but the following year Brenda got rid of the four gents, opting instead for a compact outfit, complete with female chorus and backing musicians. The hits kept on coming though, and 1971's "Right On The Tip Of My Tongue" (another ballad) also made the soul Top Ten. When they switched to Epic, "One Girl Too Late" very nearly gave them their first British hit, but a cross-Atlantic breakthrough never materialized. Brenda died in 1992, at the age of just forty-six.
The group haven't been as popular in Northern circles as they were during their American chart heyday. However, one of their early B-sides ("Hey Girl") featured on no less than three Dionn singles, and became the groups second UK release (London), thus assuring Northern spins at clubs in the late 60s. Another B-side, "A Love You Can Depend On ", gained early 70s all-nighter exposure, largely due to it being a vocal adaptation of The Van McCoy Strings' "Sweet And Easy". New Yorker McCoy loomed large in Brenda and the group's career during the early 70s, although the single on offer here pre-dates that time, and was arranged by Richard Rome. Jimmy Wisner, Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff, Bobby Martin, Thom Bell - the list of other names who have produced Brenda & The Tabulations is pure Philadelphia.
The eagle-eyed observer will have noticed that there is no 'Plug Side' depicted on the label for "That's In The Past", compared to the copy shown on the youtube posting; the 'Plug Side' on the copy I have for sale here appears on the label for "I Can't Get Over You" instead. The priorities must have been switched at some point, and promotion given to the ballad side instead. Or perhaps this permutation is the earlier of the two, with "That's In The Past" subsequently gaining the A-side plaudits. Remember, tastes do vary, and the record-buying public of 1968 could just as easily have preferred either side, to which the company would have taken note. Does anyone know the story?
A. Gorgeous group harmony ballad; written by Dee Ervin (aka Big Dee Erwin).
B. Mid-tempo crossover dancer; pure soul harmony classic, and one of the group's most soulful offerings; written by Brenda herself, along with Jerry Jones (one of The Tabulations); listen in full via the above youtube posting (not from my copy).
The vinyl has a few light "spiders webs" around the edges, and very minor signs of previous use only. There are just a tiny number of light ticks mid-way through the ballad side, while the B-side plays almost like new.
Both labels have a mild amount of dirty ring-wear, with the addition of some scuffing at one point on the B-side label (grade accordingly).
There are no stickers, sticker marks, tears, or writing.
This record has been played on both sides to verify condition, but there's a full money-back guarantee on all my sales, and I'll refund anyone who isn't totally captivated.
