As many of you will be aware, the people that run eBay have decided to introduce a free posting policy for many items - including records. They have cited over-priced postal charges as the reason for this move, but they really want an excuse to grab yet more money from the unfortunate seller. If they expect the sellers to offer a free postage service, wouldn't it be fairer for eBay to set an example, and offer a free listing service?

I'm dipping into my rarer 45s again for this one, chosen at random from my shelves. I would have reached it eventually in my alphabetical trawl - it's just appearing early.

As far as I know, Jack Montgomery only had four releases, which is a travesty considering his amazing tonsils. His real name was Marvin Tyrone Jones, and his first 45 was "Don't Take A Chance On Me" (paired with a totally unrelated instrumental, titled "Never In A Million Years"). It was released on Don Mancha's Barracuda label, based in Detroit. Next came his finest single, which was released on New York's Scepter Records in 1967. Despite being released with two alternate titles ("Dearly Beloved" and "My Dear Beloved"), it has become quite a scarcity, and can still be found on many people's wants lists (mine included). It's the only one of his singles to feature another vocal tune on the flip, in the shape of the cracking mid-tempo dancer, "Do You Believe It". 1968 saw 'Jack' appear on MCA's newly-formed Revue label, again for a sole outing (the one on offer here). His final known single was released in the early 70s, on another one-off Detroit label called Austons. Called "Beauty Isn't Born", it was again backed by an instrumental version, and is not too well-known. 

This is a near-perfect demo copy of "Baby, Baby, Take A Chance On Me". The track was probably recorded at Detroit's Tera Sherma studios, and maybe even very soon after his two Scepter sides. It was produced by John 'Mike' Terry, and co-penned by Terry with Marvin Jones (alias the singer himself). Although issue copies of this particular number merely used the instrumental version, I'd still prefer to replace it in my collection.

This one is currently priced by Manship at £200 for a minter.

The vinyl has the wispiest of fine "spiders webs" on either side, and both plays like new.

Both labels are immaculate.

The edges are completely chip-free.
