There was a time in the late 70s when it was quite difficult to escape Lou Roberts' M-G-M recordings, with or without his backing group (The Marks). In fact, he was nearly as prolific as Bobby Goldsboro back then! "Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Love" was the first of his three M-G-M tunes to appear on the scene, played by Wigan Casino's top jock, Richard Searling. He gave it deck space in the late summer of 1977, under the cover-up disguise of 'Willie Hutch'. It was followed by the catchy "Ten To One" in the spring of 1978, spun by both Russ Winstanley at Wigan, and Ian Clark at the Yate all-nighters, down in deepest Gloucestershire. The last of the three Roberts' dancers to turn up was "You Fooled Me", which appeared on Searling's playlist, later in 1978. All three soon received the unwelcome attentions of the 'press gang', being booted in 1979 on the M-G-M Special Products label.

This 1971 recording is the most collectable of the trio, and has a real throwback quality that seems to date it to somewhere in the late 60s. Both sides were produced by Michael Lloyd, who at the time was the Vice-President of A&R (Artists & Repertoire) at M-G-M. Lloyd was fresh from producing Lou Rawls on "A Natural Man" (his first hit for the label), and also produced Rawls' version of "A Man Of Value". He worked with soul legend Solomon Burke, as well as teeny-bopping Donny Osmond, The Osmonds (he produced "Crazy Horses"), David Cassidy, his brother Shaun, and The New Seekers. He went on to produce an impressive list of soul, pop, folk and country names, but the single biggest achievement that brought him the most accolades came in 1987, when he appeared as the musical supervisor for the film Dirty Dancing. However, I am bound to say that "Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Love" is still his finest moment!

A. Bouncy dancer; exceptionally catchy tune; fine vocal delivery; listen in full via the above youtube link.

B. Quality crossover-flavoured beat ballad; another polished performance.

This one is currently priced by Manship at £75 for a minter (£100 for a scarcer issue copy).

The vinyl has numerous scuffs, scrapes, and other multiple play signs, giving it a very worn appearance. The sound quality, however, is mainly much better. The A-side plays for the most part above excellent, although there is some noticeable ticking and clicking during the first few seconds (hardly anything at all after). The B-side plays with a fair amount of background noise, ticking and clicking, which lasts for a short while, but then it plays pretty much like the A-side. It's definitely DJ-friendly. 

Both labels have some minor ring-wear, which is slightlier heavier on the B-side.

The edges are completely chip-free.
