Description

SOME NOTES ON THE PAKISTANI SOUNDTRACKS: For various reasons, Pakistani films (punningly titled as "Lollywood" as the Pakistani cinema is mainly based in the city of Lahore) and its off-spring soundtracks have usually been seen as second generation attempts of this country to resemble the Bollywood industry and that it’s all the same as India. This is wrong! Pakistan did not export much of its Lollywood records and as the scene over there largely stayed in a quite closed circle of a local market and as it is seriously hard to find vintage records in Pakistan, lots of people today are unaware of the breathtakingly exciting music hidden under these 1960s and 70s Pakistani grooves!

"Pop music industry" as we know it, did not exist much in India nor Pakistan in 60s or 70s. But especially Pakistani soundtracks have a strange quality to them which sound as if each song is individually free from the soundtrack where it belongs -- this gives them a stronger "pop" record appeal and also provides a great place for experimentation.

For the most part, Pakistani soundtracks have a significantly rawer and wilder edge. Useage of electric guitar, fuzz, keys and synths alongside the ever-present regional instruments, flirting around with rock’n’roll and funky, fast paced playing are very frequently seen. Quality of arrangements are up to notch with the Indian ones and these musicians tended to give a very serious emphasis on percussions! Of course, there are many soundtracks heavy on regional sounds but even those offer incredible dynamics with superb percussion and unmatchable ryhthms. We will try to offer the most exciting records from Lollywood’s heyday whenever we can since acquiring these are extremely difficult! Please stay tuned on our auctions!

SOME NOTES ON THE SAMPLES: All samples are taken from the actual records offered on auction which not only enables the listener to sample the music but also offers the chance of play-grading the vinyl which is especially essential with records from India. Since we are offering a lot of samples this month, our server limits us to a space quota therefore some really wonderful records don't have samples; if you are interested in ANY disc which does not have samples but you'd like to hear samples from, I will be happy to provide them for you, feel free to ask.
