Here's one record that needs no introduction. Combining that most legendary of soul first names, with the commonest of surnames, Otis Smith has been trying to steal his best friend's girl for nearly forty years. The fact that he's still pleading "let her go" has been delighting soul crowds for nearly as long. In mid-1973, while the rest of the world still thought that Gary Glitter was a good choice for a baby-sitter, the scene was in between the demise of The Torch, and the opening of The Wigan Casino all-nighters. Ironically, some of the best-ever Northern Soul discoveries were made in the intervening six month period, and played at Blackool Mecca, The Catacombs, Va Va's, and other seminal venues.
Barely three years after it's release, "Let Her Go" was one such discovery, and it has been loved ever since (I expected it to have a high placing in Kev Roberts' Northern Soul Top 500, and was quite surprised that it only made #117). To cater for an increasing demand, the record was soon given a legitimate reissue by Perception, who must have been a little bemused as to why us Brits wanted one of the label's earliest singles, yet were shunning their contemporary releases by groups like The Fatback Band. Because instrumentals remained very much part and parcel of all-nighters at the time, these reissues were given the band track of "Let Her Go" on the flip. While this might have been a good move in the mid-70s, owners of these reissues miss out on the original B-side, "Alley Full Of Trash And Bottles". It's a dancer's delight, set at a frantic pace, and with a repeated "gotta get out" emphasing the depressing nature of the scene. With phrases such as "living like this we ain't got no future", the lyrics are very reminiscent of "Bricks, Broken Bottles And Sticks" by Dean Parrish.
This one is currently priced by Manship at £150 for a minter - "do the right thing", and get in early!
The vinyl has just a handful of superficial "spiders webs". The A-side has one brief tick a few seconds in, then plays near to mint. The B-side plays near to mint throughout.
Both labels are immaculate, with machine-stamped matrix numbers in the deadwax.
The edges are completely chip-free.
