78 RPM George Jefferson Aka: Lonnie Johnson Extremely Rare Bearcat Blues Gennett.
This is a very rare recording of Bearcat Blues. I cannot find another in existence. The flip side is Down Home Special, another Lonnie Johnson song. Preformed by Watson’s Pullman Porters. When you listen to it I think you might decide the guitar work sounds familiar as well.
A little background is in order. According to an article I found at The Document Store dated October 1927 to February 1928:
In 1927 while Lonnie Johnson was under contract with Okeh he wrote some songs 4 days after the St Louis Tornado that killed apps 84 people. But Okeh had other music they wanted him to play and they had a bit of a falling out. Lonnie Johnson using the aliases George Jefferson and Bud Wilson and Jimmy Blythe using the names Willie Woods and Duke Owens moved over to Gennett. They were there only about a week before going back to Okeh and doing a guest appearance with Louis Armstrong’s Hot Five.
As for the record: it has several scratches and scuffs and it does have very noticeable grey noise throughout. But it’s not bad and you can still enjoy the music. I’m not an expert but I would rate it a solid V. I have enjoyed it immensely and would grade it closer to V+ but I’m biased because it’s such a fantastic part of Blues history.
It will be shipped in a new generic sleeve and packaged appropriately for the piece of history it is.
